Star of the Sea lifted their first ever All-Ireland title, taking the prize to Northern Ireland for the first time in its history. The Belfast team, coached by Danny Fulton, had been predicted for success for many years, but finally delivered thanks to a crop of talented domestic players and a pair of committed Americans. Guard Gareth Maguire and US forward John Leahy gained recognition as Home and Overseas Players of the Year, and their contribution was invaluable as Star also retained their Play Off crown ahead of nearest challengers Notre Dame. Dungannon enjoyed a promising debut season in the top flight, while 1997 Superleague Champions Neptune plummeted from grace, ending up in joint possession of last place. |

| The Division One League Championship went right to the final weekend this season with three teams still able to lift the title. In the end, it was the leaders all season Sligo All-Stars who overcame their patchy title run in to head off newcomers Waterford and old hands Limerick for the title. Waterford gained some compensation by taking the Top Four Championship in Cork, handing Sligo a 90-68 beating. |

Denny Notre Dame retained their Irish Cup title on their home court in Dublin, defeating Cork rivals Neptune 79-73. The Dublin team, who had surprisingly eliminated Star of the Sea in the semi-finals, outlasted Neptune down the stretch, and gave their injured player/coach Anthony Jenkins something to smile about. Wildcats broke their Irish Cup duck on the back of 24 points apiece from Jillian Hayes and MVP Michelle Maguire, defeating Naomh Mhuire 72-58. |
