Sabonis, Divac, Fox to miss Olympics

Legendary Lithuanian centre Arvydas Sabonis will miss the Sydney Games with a foot injury. The 35 year old, who was a member of the Soviet Union's Olympic gold winning squad of 1988, underwent foot surgery in June after leading Portland Trailblazers to the NBA's Western Conference Finals..

The loss of Sabonis is a severe blow to the 1992 Olympic bronze medalists, who are also without forwards Arturas Karnisovas and Virginijus Praskevicius due to injuries.

Yugoslavia have also been hit with confirmation that Sacramento Kings centre Vlade Divac has opted to miss the Games.

And Canada will be without Los Angeles Lakers' Rick Fox and centre Jamaal
Magliore, the first-round draft pick of the Charlotte Hornets this summer. Neither reported to the team’s training camp.

However Newcastle Eagles' Andrew Mavis, former Chester guard Greg Francis and ex-Worthing favourite Shawn Swords all made the final squad selected by Canuck coach Jay Triano.

Canadian squad
Rowan Barrett (Venezuela), guard Greg Francis (Chester), forward Peter Guarasci (Germany), forward Eric Hinrichsen (Belgium), forward Andrew Mavis
(Newcastle), forward Michael Meeks (France), forward Greg Newton (Brazil) and guard Shawn Swords (Switzerland).
