Brits see bronze snatched away
Great Britain and Northern Ireland Men’s Wheelchair Basketball Team fell to an agonising 57–54 defeat in their quest for a bronze medal on the final day of the Paralympics 2000 in Sydney.
The British team maintained their 31–27 half time lead for most of the second half but the United States fought back to tie the game 52-52 with just two minutes remaining.
A missed two point shot by Dan Johnson, with just 24 seconds of the game left, was rebounded by the USA’s William Waller. The USA’s top scorer, Paul Schulte (14) shot a three pointer on the buzzer to deliver the bronze medal to the USA.
“I can’t believe it went through”, said Schulte. “When it went in I was numb. I’m thrilled that the shot went in and we can take home the medal.”
David Titmuss, Great Britain & Northern Ireland Coach, said his team felt unlucky with their loss, “The guys feel gutted, there’s no other word for it. The game could have gone into overtime. We had the momentum and we could have won it.”
In the Men’s final Canada defeated the Netherlands 57–43 to take home the gold. The Netherlands started the game well with a 6–0 run but Canada fought back for a 29–21 half time lead. Patrick Anderson top scored for the Canadians with 23 points.
The British Women’s Team leave Sydney with eighth place in the basketball after Germany won the play off 43–32 to take seventh position.
