Magic spell on Ware

Round-Up

NBL Conference: Manchester 91 Ware 66

This was not a classic game. With the crowd having to endure yet another late start, their mood of resignation was reflected on the court, where the play only occasionally stuttered into life, at least in the early stages.  The Magic went into an early 9-2 lead, but the Rebels came back to end the first quarter only  1 point down.

Throughout the game, the Rebels played a dull, but fairly effective style, with most of their points coming from Matt Clarkson from under the basket,  whereas the Magic had a wider range of options. These started to tell in the second quarter, when their usual big hitters, Steven Gayle and Antony Haase, started to get into their stride and were joined by an improved Samit Nurijev. Newcomer Andrew Lovedale came on for the first time and immediately looked the part, as the Magic stormed away to a 41-22 half-time lead.

The second half was dominated by the Magic youngsters, with coach Jeff Jones resting his more experienced  players with the Worthing game next day in mind. Callum Jones, John Shaw and Haris Charalambous all enjoyed more freedom than they have had recently, to show why they are highly regarded and Jacob Molina had his best home game for the club. John Shaw ended the third quarter with a nice 10 ft. jump shot on the buzzer, to put the Magic 60-35 in the lead.

The last quarter was dominated for the Magic by Samit Nurijev  and the Magic youngsters, with Alex Hodgson making a good, quiet contribution. The game ended with a sweet two points for Andrew Lovedale to send the fans home pleased if not thrilled by their team’s 91-66 victory.

Division One: Worcester 70 London United 85

London United travelled to the fancied Worcester Wolves on Saturday evening to try to continue their four game winning streak and succeeded with a 85-70 victory.

Worcester have a great set up at the University modelling the entertainment package for the rest in Division One to follow, with their team entering the arena in Wolf masks to Michael Jackson’s thriller it proved enough to motivate United from the start to show them who was the masters on the court.

The game started well for United with them moving them ball well at the offensive end and getting easy looks inside through Sammy Rahman and Walid Mumuni.

Pete Deppisch nailed an early three pointer to help draw out the Wolves defence.

Wolves replied with their own Cooprinder nailing three successive three point efforts and then captain Solvason hitting two. After a time out by London coaching staff the tactic was to stop the long range shots which had an immediate impact.

United took a first quarter lead of 20-27 and the game continued in United favour for the second quarter with Sammy Rahman doing the damage with 14 first half points and United leading by 30-48.
Deppisch took a lot of shots and was low on his percentages, although still managed to nail 13 first half points.

The third quarter saw a slight turnaround with Wolves outscoring United by only three points and then with the last quarter in progress Livingston stepped up to hit three quick three pointers raising the home crowds expectations, only to see London fast break for lay ups to keep them at bay.
United saw the game out with ease winning by 15 points taking them to a 5-1 winning  record joining them at the top of the Division One standings.

The United team take on Mansfield Express in the next game at Brunel University at Uxbridge on the Saturday 21st December tip off at 6pm, and will be without Pete Deppisch due to his temporary return to the U.S although they hope to see the early return of Gary Maitland after his ankle injury.
