Solent lead quarter charge

Solent 121 Ealing 101

It took Solent Stars precisely 80 seconds to reach the important 8 point benchmark lead that they would need to progress to the quarter  final of the National Trophy en route to 121-101 victory over Ealing.

The Tornadoes gradually came into the game and it took new American player, Marlin Capers, with a three pointer to restore Solent's necessary lead (17 - 7) by the fifth minute.  With John Bynum driving Solent forward, the pace of the first quarter was fast and 57 points were scored as Solent built up a commanding lead  (36 - 21).

Inevitably the scoring rate could not be maintained and the teams  seemed to be content with exchanging baskets to maintain the status quo.  Bynum took on more of a scoring role (10 points) as he drove inside on several occasions. Solent then seemed to lose their way in the third quarter and a spirited rally by Ealing saw them come to within nine points of the Solent total (72 - 63).  Some of these points came as frustration boiled over for Solent and Alan Cunningham was charged with a technical foul for alerting the referee to what he considered a missed foul call.   Trevor Donaldson then scored a three pointer  which seemed to settle Solent and a flurry of free throw scores at the end of the quarter took Solent to 24 point lead (90 - 66).

The flashpoint of this bonfire night match came in the fifth minute of the final quarter with Solent leading by 28 points (103 - 75). Donaldson was tripped and pushed from behind after gathering the ball under his own basket.  His subsequent reaction got him a disqualification foul.  The incident happened just a few feet in
front of the Solent bench and Marlin Capers, who had earlier been substituted, was adjudged to have encroached on the court, which meant that he too was disqualified.  Capers had left the game with
cramp and had spent several minutes lying on the ground and was receiving treatment when the incident happened.   The game was halted for nearly five minutes whilst the situation was sorted out and the
Ealing player, Milek Givens, was charged with a foul that carried no penalty.  The game continued eventually and Solent's English players who constituted the team throughout the final quarter were able to increase the lead to 30 points (121 - 91) before a late flurry of Ealing points brought them back.

Ware Rebels  73  Derbyshire Arrows  83

Derbyshire Arrows completed their National Trophy pool fixtures with a hard fought road victory over the Ware Rebels by 73-83. The game was always going to be a difficult encounter with the Rebels determined to avenge their twenty points defeat by the Arrows at Queens Park earlier in the season and secure their own passage to the next round of the competition.

The Arrows struggled in the early exchanges with only Jamie Davidson able to make an impact against a resolute Rebels defence and the quarter closed with the Arrows uncharacteristically trailing 21 – 14.

The Arrows were stung into action with Bevington, Gayle, Hackett & Waite all contributing as the Arrows began to eat away at the Rebels advantage to reach the interval trailing by only 38 – 36.

The Arrows although still not playing at their best had started to gain a grip on the game with resolute defense, led by “Tilly” Hackett beginning to shackle the Rebels, while the Arrows variety of offensive weapons was beginning to take effect as the Arrows went into the final quarter with a slender 55 – 57 lead.

The Arrows were united in purpose in the final quarter with Gayle dictating the game in attack well supported by Bevington, Waite & Davidson, they were able to outscore the Rebels 26 – 18.

Solent 100 Inter Basket 85

Honours were even for the first part of this game played at the Space  Centre, Shoreditch in this final game of the Southern Pool of the  National Trophy.   However, whilst Interbasket were unable to score in the last three minutes of the quarter, Solent added eight points,  including a John Bynum three pointer, to forge ahead.   The lead  would have been bigger had Solent not missed five of their seven free  throws in the quarter.

InterBasket persisted in their zone defence formation and Solent  overcame this by accurate outside shooting by Bynum and Chris Sheldrick and penetrating drives by Marlin Capers.  Having managed
only one basket in five minutes play proved too frustrating for InterBasket coach, Joe White, who picked up a technical foul for breating the referee.   By the sixth minute of the second quarter Solent had built a commanding 33 - 17 lead.  A long hopeful, but successful, three point attempt by InterBasket closed the gap to 14 points at half time (44 - 30)

Solent's best period was in the third quarter with solid defensive work by Chris St. Omer and Chris Sheldrick and  several steals by John Bynum and Duane Laight .   This allowed Solent to build up their biggest lead in the game (60 - 34) by the fifth minute.   The teams traded baskets for the rest of the quarter.

Feelings ran high in the last quarter as InterBasket seemed to vent their frustration by niggling contact and actions.  The referees were forced to halt the game with just over three minutes remaining and talk to the respective coaches about the ill-feeling that was developing, though it might have been better to have penalised the main offenders.   InterBasket staged a brief rally to come within 14 points of Solent at 88 - 74, but with Marlin Capers resting on the bench, Steve Davison, Trevor Donaldson, Alan McDonald and John Bynum were able to maintain the scoring differential to the end of the game.
