NBL Round-Up - Week One
The National Basketball League and Men’s National Trophy began with all the action promised by the re-structure and the events of the close season. All teams held a minutes silence to mark the horrific events in New York earlier this week. The Pool stage of the Men’s National Trophy sees the top flight of the NBL take on Division One as each pool contains teams from both divisions.
Holders of the National Trophy, Teesside Mohawks brought back some familiar faces for the 2001/2002 season in a bid to retain the Trophy and go a couple of steps further in the NBL Conference. Ralph Bucci lead the scoring as the Mohawks beat Doncaster Panthers 130 – 61. NBL Conference Winners and Play Off Champions, Plymouth Raiders were pushed to the edge by last seasons’ Men’s Division One Winners, Oxford Devils. Trailing by 12 points (26 – 14) at the end of the first quarter and by 9 at the half (49 – 40), the Raiders showed their experience as Todd Cetnar returned to the line up, leading Plymouth to an 83 – 82 victory. Worthing Thunder had the upperhand in the south coast derby against Solent Stars (109 – 86) who quite clearly had their mind on other things after players yet to arrive in the country have been affected by the tragedy in New York.
NBL Conference outfits, InterBasket London and Kingston Wildcats both received shocks against Division One opposition. Milek Jivens made 22 points to help Ealing Tornados see off last season’s Trophy Finalists, InterBasket 106 – 76 at Brunel University and Kingston’s first taste of competition as members of the Conference did not go to plan against Ware Rebels, losing 87 – 70.
Newcomers to NBL Division One Women, UWIC Cardiff Stealers saw of last season’s sixth placed Wandsworth Sting, 60 – 49. Spelthorne Acers fell to a home defeat against Thames Valley Tigers, 75 – 67 but their second team won in the new look NBL Division Two Women, beating fellow southern outfit Brixton Lady Topcats, 60 – 49. Tyne and Wear look strong going into the new season, beating Ipswich Bobcats 91 – 78 at Temple Park. Chelmsford Swifts could not quite hold on against Swindon Sonics, a new team in Division Two Women South, missing out 70 – 67. There were mixed fortunes for newcomers to the Women’s game with wins for Oxford SheDevils and Birmingham Force but disappointment for Caister Champions, Sheffield Hallam Hatters.
Northampton Neptunes got off to a flying start against Northumbria University making a staggering 40 points in the first quarter. Lead by former London Towers guard Mark Spatcher (34pts), Northampton stretched out a lead that despite fighting to the end, Northumbria could not claw back.
Division Three Play Off Finalists, Barking & Dagenham and Bristol Bombers both continued from where they left off demolishing Swindon Sonics (84 – 54) and Tamar Valley Cannons (89 – 42) respectively.NBL Trophy
