Tralee 76Tralee’s Cup dreams were brought to a cruel halt for another year with a nail-biting 76-80 defeat to Burger King Limerick, setting the victors up fpr a final clash with Star of the Sea .
Limerick started well and built up a 7-point lead, advancing 13-6 midway through the quarter. BJ McFarlan was all over Tralee and even the sharp shooting of Jermaine Turner and Rik Leonard couldn’t push Tralee in front. Six points from BJ in the final minute gave Limerick a 16-23 lead at the end of the first period.
Limerick continued to control the second quarter and pushed ahead 29-21 with 3 minutes gone. Tralee battled hard and when an offensive foul was called on Cleotis Brown, Rik Leonard capitalised and narrowed the margin, 29-23. Baskets from Teahan, Quirke and a steal followed by a slam dunk from Jermaine Turner and Tralee were right back in the game 27-30. Baskets from the duo, Brown and McFarlan put Limerick back on track for 7 point lead at half time (33-40).
Six minutes into the third quarter and Tralee went ahead for the first time in the game, 49-48. Brown was back on the free throw line seconds later and levelled the game, 49 a piece. Barnaby Craddock found his form for the remainder of the quarter, taking Tralee back into the lead, 63-55 going into the final period.
Tralee opened the final quarter with a basket to give them a 10point lead. Eight consecutive baskets from Limerick without a reply from Tralee and Limerick were right back in the game, 65-63 with 5 minutes left in the game. It was basket for basket and when BJ McFarlan fouled out of the game with 2 minutes to go, it looked like Tralee may clinch it. But it was Limerick’s night and they took a 3-point lead when Teahan converted two free throws with a minute to go. Brown and Hall both went to the free throw line in the closing seconds and made ¾ to win out
