ESB Senior Women’s Cup

Bausch & Lomb Wildcats 54                                56 Mercy Coolock

A deserved victory for Mercy Coolock, on fire from tip-off and giving Wildcats their biggest shock in a quite some time.  The year is the first time Coolock have entered the Cup competition at senior level and to make it to the 2002 semi-finals is quite an achievement.

Coolock went for Wildcats in the opening quarter and led 17-15 at the end of the first quarter.  The second quarter continued basket for basket, but lots of hard work from Mercy Coolock kept them in the lead at half time, 29-27.

The Waterford girls came into the game in true Wildcat spirit in the third quarter, but inaccurate shooting left them down time and again.  Thanks to five 3-pointers from Olivia O’Reilly, Wildcats took the lead, 43-38 going into the final quarter.

Midway into the final quarter Coolock levelled the game, before Wildcats took off again and led by 4points with 3 minutes remaining.  Niamh McEvoys 3-point play and a coast to coast lay up from Coolock captain, Lyndsay Pete made it a one-point game in favour of the Dublin team.  A jump shot from Catriona White with 8 seconds remaining put Wildcats 1 point ahead, but not for long when Lyndsay Pete hit the winning 3-pointer on the buzzer to knock the title holders out of the competition.

Coolock’s Eleanor Curran was named MVP.

ESB Senior Men’s Cup

Burger King Limerick 110                               95 St Vincent’s

Burger King Limerick got off to a poor start and the physical Vincent’s side took an early 18-9 lead.  St Vincent’s held a 10pt lead for most of the first quarter until the closing minutes when Limerick started to come into the game.  Limerick narrowed the deficit to 6 points at the end of the first quarter, but trailed 23-29 after ten minutes.

The second quarter was basket for basket with Limerick back in the game and taking the lead for the first time.  Limerick got into team fouls early in the second quarter but managed to take a 3pt lead at half time, 48-45.

Burgerking Limerick stepped up their game in the third quarter and midway through the period enjoyed a 10pt lead.  Vincent’s did not delay and came back, making the cup quarter final a 2point game at the end of the third quarter.

Vincent’s got into foul trouble in the final quarter, the fouling out of Mick Richardson and Mike Trimmer marked the end of their 2002 Cup dreams.  Burgerking pulled ahead 95-87 with 4 minutes remaining and Vincent’s could not respond.  Limerick went on to book their first ever semi-final spot by defeating Vincent’s 110-95.

Frosties Tigers 84                              77 Neptune

Frosties avenged their league defeat earlier this year with a 84-77 defeat over Neptune. The speculation during the week that Stephen McCarthy may return to Neptune didn’t help the Cork side and may have dented their confidence for their Cup clash in Tralee.

The opening quarter was basket for basket, Tralee winning 19-17 after ten minutes.  The home team pulled away in the second quarter enjoying a 7 point lead going into half time.  Tralee stretched the lead to 65-55 at the end of the third quarter but the last quarter saw Neptune bring it back to 2points with less than four minutes remaining.  Barnaby Craddock rescued Tralee in the closing minutes by converting 6 free throws to put Tralee through to the semi finals.

Waterford Crystal 84                              62 Abbey Foods Sligo

Despite the eagerly awaited return of Greg Burston to the Sligo squad on Saturday, the team from the West were unable to pull off a spot in the semi-finals of the 2002 ESB Cup.  Waterford Crystal dominated the court and were in control for most of the game.

Crystal took an early lead and went out in front 20-11 at the end of the first quarter.  The second quarter repeated Waterford’s comfortable lead and they were up 39-29 at half time.

Sligo came into the second half on fire and made a comeback to cut the game to 3 points midway through the third quarter.  However Waterford pulled ahead again and looked like semi-final contenders at the end of the third quarter 54-44.

Greg Burston did not have the impact the Sligo team were hoping for this weekend, however when the American forward fouled out in the last quarter it marked the end of any hope for Sligo.  Crystal stretched the lead for a comfortable 22-point victory to book their spot in the semi-finals for the second consecutive year.

Sx3 Star  86                             73 Tolka Rovers

Star ended the last chance of any Dublin team making the 2002 Cup finals when they defeated Tolka Rovers in the University of Ulster.    Despite a poor opening quarter from Star they went on to take the last semi-final spot.
Tolka stormed into the opening quarter taking an early 27-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Star fought back hard in the second quarter to make it a one-point game at half time.  The opening minutes of the third quarter could have marked the end of it for Star when Deric McGhee slipped and sat out the rest of the quarter with a groin strain.  However the Northern men were unstoppable and turned the game around.  Star sought control midway through the third period and Tolka Rovers no longer had a look in.  Star hustled well and put on a full court press to take an 8-point lead going into the final quarter 66-58.

Paddy Boylan fouled out in the final quarter, but it was already too late for Tolka Rovers and they return to Dublin to wait yet another year to make the Cup title a reality.  Star ran out winners 86-73.
