Killester joy as Pierce halts Limerick sweep

Women's Final
Killester 78
Unv Limerick 66

Killester last won the senior women’s Cup back in 1973, so it was a momentous occasion when they defeated UL 78-66. Emma Pierce was duly awarded the MVP having accomplished seven 3-pointers in the game.

The first quarter was basket for basket with Pierce in white hot form from the 3-point line. When Limerick opened up an 8-point lead in the sixth minute of the game, Killester shot back with a basket from Sinead Vaughan and followed by two consecutive 3-pointers from Pierce, Killester were back on top, 16-15. Killester never looked back and led 23-18 at the end of the first period.

Killester totally dominated the second quarter, Carmel Kissane and Vanessa Burke all over the tired Limerick women. With 5 minutes remaining in the half, Killester earned a 10-point lead, 32-22. It was left to Michelle Aspell and Niamh Mullally to score for Limerick, but Killester had them covered in defense and the game was stitched up by half time, 44-29.

While Limerick battled hard in the third quarter, the deficit was too wide and when Pierce’s sixth 3-pointer went through the net, Limerick knew the hat-trick was out of reach. Killester led by 22 points going into the final quarter, 62-40.

Killester were kept to 6 points in the last ten minutes as Aspell and Mulally reduced the deficit.
