ESB Men's Superleague - Game Reports
Neptune v Esat Business Demons
This game was very defensive from the beginning with both teams tentative in
their execution. Neptune made the early running with some excellent fast
breaks to leave them 8 points ahead early on. Demons came back into
contention getting their inside game going. By the halfway stage they had
pulled back the deficit to 3 points 34-31.
After the interval Brian Clernon hit some excellent shots from outside the
arc. Demons took the initiative and looked as if they would close the game
out at the beginning of the final quarter, leading 59-52. Neptune were not
to be outdone and chipped away at the lead, holding Demons scoreless for
several minutes. It was Demons that needed to hit the shots in the last
couple of minutes, but it was the Neptune defense that helped to seal the
win at 73-69.Burger King Limerick v Waterford Crystal
Burger King Limerick take their position on top of the league table after
their second defeat over Waterford Crystal this season. The game was basket
for basket for the duration and it was 19 fouls picked up by Waterford in
the final quarter which gifted Limerick the valuable two points. With six
weeks left in the men's Superleague, Limerick's win this weekend will
undeniably prove vital in the coming weeks.
Ryan Gorman and James Singleton had a good first quarter for Waterford
Crystal, with Browne and McFarlan doing it all for Limerick. Two 3 pointers
from Cleotis Brown in the final minute of the first quarter and Limerick led
25-16 after 10 minutes.Dean Kavanagh brought Crystal right back into the game early in the second
quarter and only 3 points separated the teams at half time. Waterford took
the lead in the third quarter and their height advantage damaged Limerick
inside. Crystal's big man Joe Malone hit some nice baskets, while Kavanagh
and Malone threatened the home side throughout the game. When Browne was
rested for a period in the third quarter, John Galvin excelled offensively
for Limerick and they led 69-67 at the end of the third quarter.Limerick held their lead in the final quarter and consistent shooting from
the free throw line caught Crystal out in the end. Dean Kavanagh and Mike
Keohane battled for Waterford to the very end, but when Singleton fouled out
in the closing seconds, Waterford had to settle for the 94-84 loss.Sx3 Star v Abbey Foods Sligo
Scott Summersgill was back on form against Abbey Foods Sligo after his
disappointing performance in the Cup final last week. Despite Marvin Dixon
picking up an ankle injury early in the second half and sitting out much of
the remainder, Star never looked threatened by Sligo.Having top-scored on 36 points against Big Al's Notre Dame last night, Greg
Burston was unable to play today due to a reoccurring calf injury.
ESB Women's Superleague - Game Reports
Tolka Rovers v University of Limerick
Tolka Rovers made no mistakes this weekend when they met UL for the second
time in a week. A win this weekend was the only option for Coach Maeve
Coleman and her team, to stay in with a shot at the women's Superleague
title.Tolka Rovers never let up in the first three quarters, leading by 10 points
at half-time(46-36). Where they made mistakes last week, they had an
excellent game performance, slipping only in the final quarter when
University of Limerick brought it back to 4. Limerick's hope was only
short lived and Tolka pulled away for a comfortable 76-63 victory.Tolka are in action against Wildcats next weekend, and after two defeats to
the Waterford women so far this season, they will be hungry for another
victory.Bausch & Lomb Wildcats v Dart Killester
Cup Champions, Killester, never looked too threatening against the
experienced Wildcats side. The first quarter saw Killester hold their own,
but early in the second quarter when Jenny Cody went on a scoring spree of 7
consecutive baskets, Killester struggled for the remainder of the game.Wildcats stretched their lead to 20 points before they played their bench
and Killester took the opportunity to bring the game back to 8 points. It
was too little too late from Killester and superb defense from the Wildcats
team saw them run out comfortable winners, 65-55.
