Waterford hold top spots

ESB Men’s Superleague

Hibernian UCD Marian 97 (50)   81 (35) Esat Business Demons
Torian Richards 25  25 Brian Clernon
Dominating their own boards Hibernian UCD Marian enjoyed a comfortable home win over Demons. A virtuoso performance from Kevin Meany in the 2nd and 3rd quarters broke the Demons defense to which they had no answer. With Torian Richards dominating all boards Marian controlled the entire basketball court.  Demons will be taking a close look at their recent performances having lost two games in the last few days.

Frosties Tigers 115 (64)  96 (38) St Vincent’s
John Teahan 41  38 Cory Dickerson
Tralee Tigers picked up their 5th win of the season in front of a large home crowd thanks to a superb display by Tralee captain John Teahan who top scored on 41 points. Frosties replaced Paul Williscroft with former Tralee favourite Roscoe Patterson and again played without the services of Ricardo Leonard.

The game started with Frosties jumping out to a 33-19 first quarter lead and by half time the home team had scored a staggering 64 points to St. Vincents 38.  St.Vincents never looked likely to trouble Tralee in the second half as the home team had all their players scoring easily.  Dickerson tried his best for Vincent’s but his 38 points did not trouble tigers as the home team starting five were now scoring in double figures and the Tralee coaching staff were able to introduce Kevin O’Donoghue and Declan Falvey into the team for their home debuts.  The final score of 115-96 puts Tralee back in the chasing pack for league honours.

Abbey Foods Sligo 58  67 Waterford Crystal
Yann Fontenau 18  29 M Keohane

Dart Killester 118 (53)  91 (44) Gleneagle Lakers
Eric Jackson 30  34 Billy Gilligan
Chris Davis 26  20 Robbie Turner
Damien Sealy 25  12 Shane Horgan
Four weeks ago ESB League Champions DART Killester’s season was in turmoil, they had just lost to Neptune in the Cup after two losses in the league. Enter Jerome Westbrooks and his backroom team of Martin Grennell and Todd James and three wins later the DART is back on the rails and the retention of the league title is still a reality.

It was never going to be easy for Gleneagle Lakers going into Saturday’s game against DART Killester, the home team was confident and on a role while the visitors had lost a few games. As well as that their American Gareth Bragg had decided to try his luck in the CBA and coach Bill Regan resigned due to ill health to be replaced by player coach Robbie Turner.
The Kerrymen held their own in the first quarter but the home side began to take control in the second and went in at the interval 53-44 up. DART had their now customary burst in the third quarter and led by 21 points with ten minutes to go.
Gleneagle Lakers lost their composure feeling they were hard done by the referee’s, picked up a couple of technicals, Billy Gilligan got frustrated and began shooting from all angles and the game was over as a contest. DART lost Eric Jackson on five fouls with six minutes to go and took out Chris Davis for the last five minutes but still ran out easy winners.
Jerome Westbrooks decided to sit out the game to rest his calf injury but despite the 27 point win he was far from happy. “I will give them a good rollicking on Tuesday, their concentration at times was awful, you saw how much they gave the ball away and then had to fight to get it back, I’m delighted with another win but not the way we did it”

Neptune 107 (58)  71 (37) Tyrone Towers
Kenny Gamble 39  17 Michael Hand
In the opening quarter that can only be described as sleepy saw Neptune score at will to lead 24-4 with 3.22 remaining. After a Tyrone time-out Neptune themselves fell asleep and gave up 11 straight points before the alarm went off, when two baskets from Gamble who had l6 in the quarter, as Neptune restored momentum to finish the quarter 30-15 ahead. Neptune continue to dominate the second quarter with the highlight being three Kenny Gamble dunks as he finished the half on 25 points.
The Neptune lead 58-37. Neptune took another nap in the third quarter as they only managed four points with 2.25 left in the quarter. After a Martin Aherne time out his team rallied to lead 79-54. Neptune played the last three minutes with both Americans benched as they ran out comfortable winners 107-71. Highlights of the evening were Ger Noonan’s l5 assists and Kenny Gamble’s 39 points.

Big Al’s Notre Dame 92 (44)  100 (49) Burger King Limerick
Brandon Hughes 27   BJ McFarland
A controversial decision to call a foul on Terence Wilson with four seconds to go gave Limerick the opportunity to take this game into overtime where they went on to win by 8 points. Big Al’s with Seco and Fitzpatrick fouled out led by two with six seconds left. Cleotis Brown went to the line and missed both efforts. In the consequential melee for the rebound Wilson was adjudged to have fouled again and this time Brown made no mistake. Barely into the extra period Jenks was fouled out and there was no stopping Brown and McFarland as Burgerking closed out the game

Sx3 Star 82 (44)  95 (44) Tolka Rovers
Mervin Dixon 29  31 Zedrick Smith
Deric McGhee 18  30 Coy Patterson
Gary Connolly 9  10 Paddy Boylan
Star’s spiral of injury woe’s continued this afternoon when Adrian Fulton came out of the game with an ankle injury after two minutes.  Fulton sat out the entire game and will now be a concern for Irish coach Bill Dooley ahead of the semi-final round in two weeks time.  Despite Fulton’s absence Star finished level with Tolka, 23-23 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter continued basket for basket and at half time, nothing separated the teams, 44 a piece.  Star took the lead at the end of the third quarter, 71-69, but couldn’t maintain their game and lost it in the final ten minutes.  Where Tolka Rovers hit 26 points in the final quarter, Star managed a mere 11.  Paddy Boylan fouled out for Tolka in the closing minutes, but the Dublin side already had the game wrapped up.

University of Limerick 87 (55)  38 (19) Glanmire
Jillian Aherne 20
UL literally ran Glanmire off the floor in the first quarter, UL’s fast break was very efficient and at the end of the first quarter UL lead 35 - 9. UL continued to dominate the game and Glanmire were just unable to answer UL fast break.
