Abbey Foods Sligo 95  92 Sx3 Star

Waterford Crystal 65  73 BurgerKing Limerick
James Singleton 16  27 BJ McFarland
Ryan Gorman 14  17 Cleotis Brown
Dean Kavanagh 11  8 Robert Lynch
The opening quarter saw the best basketball of the night as the lead changed hands on 7 occasions, with the visitors leading 24 –21 at the end.

Limerick took control in the second quarter with BJ McFarland and Cleotis Brown (17pts) each notching 8 points during this period. When Ryan Gorman (14 pts: 18 reb) was substituted after picking up his third foul, and Waterford’s other American James Singleton (16 pts; 8 reb) having to take a break with an ankle injury the signs were ominous for the home side. However a brace of three-pointers from Mike Keohane helped keep in touch 35 – 44 at half time.

Burger King continued to dominate in the third, and extended the lead to 12, before Dean Kavanagh sparked some of the life into side as the rallied to 50-56 at the three quarter stage, and reduced the deficit to 2 points in the final quarter. In spite of a massive 22 offensive rebounds, some woeful shooting from Waterford Crystal helped ease the pressure on Burger king, as they ran out deserved winners.

Neptune  68  88 Esat Business Demons
Charron Watson 25  25 John Estick
Arch rivals Esat Demons inflicted Neptune's first defeat of the season in front of the biggest crowd of the year. Demons started like a team on a mission and Neptune had no answer for the pressure and determination of Demons who totally deserved their 20 point winning margin.

Demons started the better and led by 16-24 in the first quarter, John Estick and Mike Beckles scoring the points between them.
They led at the break 34-45 with Demon’s American pairings on 28 of those points. Charron Watson was Neptune's top scorer with 11 at the half.

The third quarter belonged to Demons in particular their Irish players, Brian Clernon, Shane Coughlan and O'Halloran. Demons continued to dominate and won out comfortably 68-88.

Dart Killester 116 (56)  84 (51) Tyrone Towers
Chris Davis 35  24 Jerrod Paige
Eric Jackson 24  23 Jamie Dell
For the first half of the game, Tyrone Towers looked like they might just pick up their first victory of the season, but Killester ran away with it in the second half.

The first quarter was basket for basket, with Killester outscoring Dungannon 25-23 after the first 10 minutes.  Jerrod Paige debuted for Tyrone Towers and impressed in the opening quarter.
The second quarter followed a similar suit, basket for basket until half time.  With Killester leading by 4-points, it was any one’s game until the third quarter when Killester changed their game.

Killester came on court and made fast break after fast break and the Dungannon men could do nothing to slow them.  Dungannon’s defense withered and Killester outscored the away team 38-19 in the third period.  Chris Davis put on an outstanding performance for Killester, with Eric Jackson in support.

The final quarter saw Tyrone Towers admit defeat and they threw in the towel before the fourth quarter concluded.  The northern men were visibly tired and Killester continued the massacre to win outright with a 34point surplus.

St Vincent’s  109 (52)  98 (50) Big Al’s Notre Dame
Mike Trimmer 33  38 Brandon Hughes
Cory Dickerson 27  22 Anthony Jenkins
Stephen McGuirk 24  18 Seco Camera
St Vincent’s took control in the first quarter and never looked to be in trouble for the duration of the game.  Mike Trimmer is certainly doing the business for Vincent’s and along with Cory Dickerson, the home side took an early lead.  Vincent’s outscored Big Al’s 33-25 in the first quarter.

Big Al’s came into the game in the second quarter and between Brandon Hughes and Seco Camera they managed to bring the game within two points going into half-time.  Early in the third quarter, Big Al’s went ahead by a point but this was as close as they were to get to victory.  St Vincent’s pulled away again and looked certain winners at the end of the third, leading 83-71.

Anthony Jenkins was kept out of the game by strong defense from St Vincent’s.  Jenkins scored a mere 7 points in the second half, all from the free throw line.  An intentional foul was called against Jenkins in the last quarter following an altercation with Cory Patterson.  Soon after Stephen McGuirk fouled out for St Vincent’ s but the game was well and truly over, with Vincent’s picking up two important points.

Monday
Burger King Limerick 89 (42)  93 (56) Gleneagle Lakers
BJ McFarland 34  46 Billy Gilligan
Cleotis Brown 27  17 Gareth Bragg
Tommy Walsh 17  10 Shane Horgan
Burgerking Limerick started slow and Gleneagles took advantage leading by 30 - 10 at the end of the first quarter.

Killarney upheld their lead throughout the second quarter, despite Limerick’s battle to get back in the game.  Limerick struggled with the awesome Billy Gilligan but managed to cut the deficit to 14 points going into half-time 42-56.

In the third quarter Limerick fought back hard and cut the lead to 12 points going into the final quarter. BJ McFarland was superb for Limerick and coupled with player of the year Cleotis Brown, Limerick tied the game 86 apiece with three minutes remaining in the final quarter.  However, Limerick fell apart in the last three minutes, missing free throws, lay-ups and rebounds.  Once again Killarney stepped in when Limerick weakened, and Billy Gilligan hit the last crucial baskets to pick up the points for the Kerry men.

Waterford Crystal 92 (46)  70 (29) Frosties Tigers
James Singleton 33  32 Jermaine Turner
Ryan Gorman 29  12 John Teahan
Mike Keohane 17  9 Rob Schnurer
One defeat for Waterford Crystal this weekend was enough and the team were on a mission as they came on court.  Crystal defense was excellent from the start, managing five steals in the first quarter.  Dean Kavanagh and Joe Malone were excellent in defense, while James Singleton did the offensive work for Waterford.  Tralee Tigers struggled in the first quarter until John Teahan came on court with two minutes remaining.  Tralee worked hard to cut Crystal’s early lead, but Waterford ran out ahead leading 25-16 at the end of the first quarter.

Four minutes into the second quarter, Waterford had further stretched the lead, 37-18.  Dean Kavanagh was awesome at both ends for Waterford.  Jermaine Turner, usually unstoppable on court struggled with James Singleton in offence.  Ryan Gorman hit a 3-pointer on the buzzer to make it 46-29 at half time.  It looked to be all over at this stage after two quarters of Tralee missing too many shots and rebounds.

Three minutes into the second half John Teahan and Jermaine Turner were the only ones in the zone for Tralee.  The only unbeaten team in the Superleague admitted defeat midway through the third quarter and Waterford stretched their lead to 25 points, ending the period 72-47.  The final quarter continued same and with five minutes remaining, Waterford led by 30 points.  At this point Coach Michael Evans ran his bench and Waterford ran out easy winners, 92-70 at the full time whistle.

St Vincent’s 86 (47)  99 (37) Hibernian UCD Marian
Cory Dickerson 36  29 Trevor Smullen
Stephen McGuirk 25  21 Hamp Jones
Mike Trimmer 14  20 Torian Richards
St Vincent’s started well and for a while looked like they were to enjoy two victories in two days, however it wasn’t to be, as accurate shooting from UCD Marian put Vincent’s on the wrong side of the 86-99 scoreline.
The first quarter ended 30-19 in favour of St Vincent’s, with Stephen McGuirk on fire.  Marian worked hard in the second and pulled back the score to 47-37.

Mike Trimmer picked up three fouls early in the third quarter and was replaced with John Clancy.  Clancy played 4 minutes and picked up another three personals.  Vincent’s were on team fouls and this marked the beginning of the descent.  Point-guard Paul Meaney hit 13 from 15 on the free throw line while Hamp Jones had 100% on the line, hitting five from five.  Marian outscored Vincent’s 28-14 in the third quarter to give the edge going into the final period 61-65.
Vincent’s couldn’t pull it together in the final quarter and superb shooting by point-guards, Trevor Smullen and Paul Meaney wrapped up a 99-86 victory for Hibernian UCD Marian.

Abbey Foods Sligo 85 (42)  74 (43) Tolka Rovers
Greg Burston 27  27 Coy Patterson
Mario Woodson 22  15 Zedrick Smith
Yann Fonteau 17  12 Mike Quill

The start of the final quarter marked the demise of Tolka Rovers.  Sligo hit 4 unanswered baskets in the opening minutes.  Fergal Kelly hit two 2-pointers followed by 2-pointers from Greg Burston and Marion Woodson, to put Sligo ahead 70-65 with 8 minutes to go.  Sligo got into foul trouble and Tolka came back on the free throw line.  Baskets from Burston pushed Sligo ahead with three minutes to play and sealing the game with three pointers from Yann Fontenau and Mal Daly gave Sligo a 85-74 victory.

ESB Women’s Superleague

Tolka Rovers 77 (39)  78 (38) Bausch & Lomb Wildcats
Suzanne Maguire 18  24 Catriona White
In a game where there was never more than 4 points separating the sides.  Both teams started well, with Wildcats leading 19-21 at the end of the first quarter.  The second quarter continued basket for basket as Tolka took a one point lead going into half time.  The third quarter ended with Wildcats on a 4-point lead 58-62.

With 30 seconds to go in the final quarter, Wildcats were leading by three when Tolka’s American Molly Watson hit a big 3 to put the teams on level pegging.  With 8 seconds on the clock, Olivia O’Reilly grabbed a defensive rebound and drove coast to coast only to be fouled on the lay up.  O’Reilly was on the line with two free shots.  She made the first to give Wildcats a one-point lead, but the pressure go too much and O’Reilly missed the second.  Suzanne Maguire took the rebound and with two seconds on the clock made a long range effort, but it dropped short on the buzzer to give Wildcats a win in one of the most exciting games in the women’s league for some time.

University of Limerick 57 (30)  70 (38) Sasha Meteors
Michelle Aspell 12  16 Karen Hennessy

Glanmire 41 (24)  72 (30) DART Killester
Denise Walsh 16  22 Gillian Ennis
Dart Killester had a comfortable win against newcomers Glanmire in this ladies super league game. Glanmire started brightly and kept in touch for the first half only trailing by 6 at the break.
Killester’s superior height advantage started to take its toll as the Glanmire girls tired very quickly in the third quarter and always looked in trouble. In the end Dart Killester ran out comfortable winners.
