Killester off mark as Glanmire break duck

ESB Men’s Superleague
Burger King Limerick 85 (42)  91 (52) Dart Killester
Cleotis Brown 35  31 Eric Jackson
Mario Woodson 15  23 Damien Sealy
Tommy Walsh 14  18  Chris Davis
An important first win for Dart Killester having been defeated in their first two games of the season.  A bad day for BurgerKing Limerick, their second consecutive defeat, totaling 16 turnovers in the game and a disappointing 5/29 three-pointers.

The first basket was basket for basket, Cleotis Browne demonstrating why he picked up International Player of the Year last season.  Killester finished the first quarter with a 3-point lead, 22-19.

Killester pulled away in the second quarter with a ten-point lead and further stretched it to 14 points in the third quarter.  A series of mistakes left Burger King Limerick trailing for most of the game but the final quarter saw them bring the game back to a mere 4 points.
However Killester kept control of the game and sealed their first victory of the season.

Waterford Crystal 96 (78) 34  87 (78) 44 St Vincent’s
Ryan Gorman 27  35 Cory Dickerson
Mike Keohane/ Dean Kavanagh 15  20 Mick Richardson
Rob Grant/ James Singleton 14  17 Stephen McGuirk
A miraculous return by Waterford Crystal saw them come out on top of this game, a game that looked over before half-time.  The first quarter started basket for basket and finished 18-18.

The second quarter saw St Vincent’s pull away and mid-way through the quarter had etched up a 20-point lead on Waterford Crystal.  Crystal’s American, James Singleton, who averaged 30-points a game this season, had at half time marked a bare 1-point on the score sheet and the Waterford side looked to be in trouble.  Waterford managed to bring the game to 10-points at half-time but Vincent’s confident and in control.

The third quarter continued as the second with Cory Dickerson outstanding for St Vincent’s.  Waterford started playing as a team, Robert Grant and Dean Kavanagh impressive for the side, but they still trailed 51-60 and had it all to do going into the last quarter.

The last five minutes of the final quarter saw St Vincent’s lose control of the game.  Cory Dickerson looked alone as he tried to keep the team on the right side of the score-line, but it wasn’t enough and the teams were level at full time.  Extra-time saw Mike Keohane, Ryan Gorman, Grant and Singleton put in a great team effort while Dickerson continued his one-man effort.  Five minutes into over-time and Waterford Crystal never looked back and snatched a 9-piont victory from a disappointed Vincent’s.

Tolka Rovers 89 (45)  91 (42) Neptune
Kenny Gamble 33  25 Zedrick Smyth
Charron Watson 27  21 Coy Patterson
A devastated Tolka Rovers lost the game in the last 6-seconds as well as losing their top-scorer to injury.  Smyth scored 21 points in the first half, but was taken off the court in the third quarter with injuries from two separate incidents.  Smyth was taken to hospital and received stitches to his eye and his arm.

The game was basket for basket throughout the four quarters. Tolka led 26-25 after the end of the first quarter and held their lead going into half-time.  Smyth did it all for Tolka in the first two quarters and his removal from the court in the third quarter saw Neptune gain control and even the score 67 a piece going into the final quarter.

Tolka were down 4-points midway through the quarter, leveled again and then went up four points 82-78 with three minutes remaining.  Kenny Gamble did it all for Neptune in the closing stages of the game and scored their final four baskets, giving Neptune a close victory 91-89.

Tyrone Towers 66 (30)  77 (46) Frosties Tigers
Rod Ramzey 26  27 Jermaine Turner
Jamie Dell 15  16 Rob Schnurer
Jeff Musudi 10  11 Barnaby Craddock
Tyrone Towers matched Frosties Tigers in every department in the first quarter, but were unfortunate to get into serious foul trouble early on.  Midway through the first quarter, Ramzey, Dell and Musudi had picked up three personal fouls each.  Tigers took an early lead however and came out of the first quarter leading 20-14.

The second quarter marked the end of it for Tyrone Towers.  Rod Ramzey hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter of the game, but himself, Dell and Musudi sat out the start of the second quarter.  Kieran Goodacre and Thomas Hughes stepped in and missed some vital opportunities for the Towers.  Goodacre gave away five turnovers and Tralee took advantage every time.  The Tigers were roaring and led

Sx3 Star 80 (41)  77 (41) Big Al’s Notre Dame
Gary Connolly 19  24 Brandon Hughes
Deric McGhee 17  21 Anthony Jenkins
Adrian Fulton 14  12 Camero Seco
A great start for Big Al’s Notre Dame saw them run away with the first quarter 25-15, and going on Star’s first three performances of the season, Big Al’s looked like they had it wrapped up early on.

Star settled down in the second quarter and outscored Big Al’s to make it 41-41 going into half-time.  The third quarter was basket for basket, with Star taking a 3-point lead going into the final quarter 57-54.

Irish international Adrian Fulton didn’t feature at all in the first three-quarters and hadn’t made the score-sheet going into the last quarter.  However, Fulton came good in the last ten minutes and hit 14-points to retain Star’s advantage.  With a minute to play Scott Summersgill got fouled under the baskets and made two from two on the line.  Another foul on Star had Fulton on the line to he made his shot to give Sx3 Star a well deserved victory.

Gleneagle Lakers 100 (35)  90 (49) Hibernian UCD Marian
Billy Giligan 42  23 Trevor Smullen
Andre McLoud 17  21 Hamp Jones
Garrett Bragg 13  14 Kevin Meaney
Despite trailing by 25 points early in the second quarter, Gleneagle Lakers Killarney staged a marvelous comeback to topple league leaders UCD Marian in a thrilling match at the INEC Killarney on Sunday afternoon. This result leaves the Lakers with maximum points from their opening three games and sets them up nicely for a top of the table clash with Neptune in the INEC Killarney on this Wednesday night October 17th at 8.30p.m.
Once again Billy Gilligan was outstanding for the Lakers with triple double statistics including 42 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists. His incredible intensity and will the win was the main reason why the Lakers came back from the dead to record a sensational victory. An amazing four-point play from him with just one-minute remaining was a crucial factor in Gleneagle's win.

UCD Marian were well in control from the start and with Americans Hamp Jones and Torian Richards impressing, the visitors led 17-6 with 3.50 left in the first quarter. The Lakers, who were parading new seven foot signing Garrett Bragg for the first time, failed to get any momentum going and even went a full four minutes without scoring. Trevor Smullen came off the bench and hit nine points to give Marian a 31-12 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
It got worse for Gleneagle Lakers as Marian raced into a 25 point lead, 39-14 with 7:50 left in the first half, and there seemed to be no way back for the home side. However Billy Gilligan began to show his class and gave the home side a glimmer of hope as they reduced the deficit to 49-35 at half-time.

Early baskets from Vince Daly brought the Lakers back to within 10 points upon the resumption and a big three-pointer from Andre McLoud reduced it to 49-42 with 8:44 left in the third quarter. However Marian remained in control with Smullen particularly prominent to lead 60-47 with six minutes left in the quarter. However the Lakers came surging back scoring ten points without reply thanks to threes from Gilligan and Shane Horgan along with crucial scores from McLoud and it was 60 -57 with three minutes left.
Daly and Gilligan added further three-pointers and the Lakers took a 67-65 lead and stayed in front to lead 69-68 as the game entered the final quarter.

Exchanges remained close and with Hamp Jones impressing Marian led 82-79 with five minutes left. Vince Daly then fouled out for Gleneagle but Garrett Bragg kept them in touch to trail 83-84 with three minutes left.  Team captain Shane Horgan pushed the Lakers in front again but they still trailed by one, 89-90, with one minute on the clock, but an amazing four-point play from Billy Gilligan turned the game on its head. Gilligan's massive downtown three drew a foul from Trevor Smullen and he duly sank the resultant free shot to put the Lakers 92-90 ahead. Gilligan, Bragg and McLoud then added further minutes to put the game out of reach of Marian and record a rather flattering 10-point win for Gleneagle in the end.

UCD Marian will ponder how they let a 25-point advantage slip away and considering that they finished with six players on double figures, it is hard to imagine how they lost. However match MVP Billy Gilligan was unstoppable and his tremendous efforts were duly rewarded in the finish.

Esat Business Demons 97 (35)  55 (30) Abbey Foods Sligo
John Estick 33  30 Greg Burston
Mike Beckles 24  22 Yann Fontenou

A game that saw Esat Business in control for the entirety despite a scrappy first half.  The second half Demons controlled the backboards and retained majority possession to grant them an easy victory over Sligo.

Dart Killester 65 (36)  63 (32) Bausch & Lomb Wildcats
Emma Pierce 15  32 Olivia O’ Reilly
Gillian Ennis 11  15 Catriona White
Sinead Vaughan 9  6 Michelle MaGuire
A brilliant win for Killester, defeating the reigning champions.

Killester were coasting and led by 16points with a little over three minutes to play.  It looked like it was all over for Wildcats when Olivia O’ Reilly went on fire and hit six consecutive baskets, totaling an outstanding 32 points for the game, and leveling the teams with 63-points a piece in the final seconds.  Emer Brophy secured Killester a victory with a basket on the buzzer, 65-63.

Glanmire 58 (20)  45 (26) Sasha Meteors
Sarah Jane O’ Connell 30  13 Eileen Bradley
Denise Walsh 11  8 Catherine O’Sullivan
Lauren Dennehy 8  6 Eleanor Lindsay
Glanmire recorded their first ever super league win by defeating Sasha Meteors by 58 points to 45.  The Glanmire team looked less nervous than their previous two games and didn't give away a big lead to their Dublin opponents.15 -11 up in the first quarter it looked that an upset might be on the cards.

In the second quarter things turned a little, with Meteors playing better and Glanmire having difficulty containing Eileen Bradley.  Glanmire’s gritty determination pulled them right back into the game in the third quarter and they went to the break leading by 1.

In the final quarter Glanmire turned up the scoring heat and pulled away from Meteors. A very strong defensive display paved the way for this their first ever super league victory. Excellent displays by Irish international Denise Walsh and Junior international Sarah Jane O' Connell also helped no end in the victory, but there were really no stars in this historic team win for Glanmire.
