Dart Killester’s title defence got off to the worst possible start at the I.W.A. in Clontarf last night as they let a 12pt first half lead slip to go down to Dublin rivals UCD Marian.

New coach Ken Black started with Captain Damien Sealy, the experienced Jerome Westbrook’s and Ed Randolph, Eric Jackson and new signing Chris Davis. Killester started well, but the absence of a point guard on court did not make things easy for them, and the speed of Marian’s new signing Trevor Smullen punished them at times.

But despite the frequent mismatch at the point, Killester stormed into a 12pt lead with 2 ½ minutes remaining in the first half. Some sloppy defence and an excellent offensive period for Marian, for whom Jones and Smullen were outstanding, same that lead cut to just 5pt at the half time break.

Marian continued to dominate at the restart as Killester could not produce the form that had lead them to the league and cup double last season, and baskets from Jones, Smullen and Robinson combined to put Marian up 12pts going into the final period and the result seemed inevitable.

GLENEAGLE Lakers Killarney snatched a dramatic victory from the jaws of defeat against St. Vincent’s in the National Events Centre Killarney on Saturday night. This was a match that St. Vincent’s dominated for long periods and enjoyed 12-point advantages at different stages throughout the game. In fact the Dubliners led 73-62 at the start of the last quarter but the homed side stepped it up to score 21 points in the final ten minutes compared to just ten points from the Dubliners. In a nail biting finish Andre McCloud secured victory for the home side with the winning basket with four seconds remaining.

The opening stages of this match were closely contested but the Dubliners pulled away to lead 16-10 with four minutes left thanks to baskets from Stephen McGuirk and David Donnelly. However Shane Horgan, Cormac O' Donoghue and Billy Gilligan brought the Lakers back to trail 21-19 with two minutes left. St. Vincent’s finished the quarter stronger scoring eight points without reply from Mick Richardson to lead 29-19. McCloud clawed it back to 29-22 at the end of the first quarter. St. Vincent’s dominated most of the second quarter and were 35-24 in front after three minutes. Billy Gilligan and to a lesser extent Nic Cordew brought Gleneagle back again to trail 35-39 with 2:47 left but a Corey Dickerson three-pointer pushed St. Vincent’s clear to lead 46-38 at half-time. Dickerson added another three that kept Vincent’s 53-42 ahead and despite successive baskets from Gilligan and Cordero for the Lakers, St. Vincent’s led 65-55 with three minutes left in the third quarter. James Fleming, off the bench, sank a massive three-pointer for Gleneagle but Vincent’s led 71-62 as the game entered the final quarter. Dickerson scored again upon the resumption to push Vincent’s 73-62 in front but Gilligan and Vince Daly reduced it to 75-70 with six minutes left.

Vincent’s were dealt a big blow when American Antoine Sinclair fouled out with 5:49 left and big baskets from Gilligan and David Griffin levelled matters at 75 each with 3:20 left. Griffin then sent the Lakers 77-75 in front with two free shots with 2:30 left but Dickerson replied again. A big jumper from Griffin had the Killarney crowd on their feet with 1:20 remaining to put the Lakers 79-78 ahead after Stephen McGuirk made a free throw for Vincent’s. McGuirk added one more free shot with 1:05 left to level it at 79 each but Vince Daly pushed the Lakers 81-79 ahead with 40 seconds left. Dickerson levelled it with two free shots with 26 seconds on the clock but the Lakers utilised their last possession well and a great pass from Billy Gilligan set up Andre McCloud for the winning basket with four seconds left.

2001 Foreign Player of the Year Cleotis Brown proved the thorn in Abbey Foods Sligo’s sides at the University Arena last night as he slam-dunked Limerick to their first win of the season.

Limerick led from the start, but Sligo kept relatively close thanks mostly to the offensive work of Greg Burston, and some excellent assists from new point guard Yann Fontenou.

But despite Sligo’s hard work, Brown, and an on-fire Tommy Walsh gave Limerick a 7pt halftime lead.

Limerick really pulled ahead in the final quarter as Sligo tired, and built up a comfortable margin in the end.

Veteran Gordon Fitzgerald scored a lay up with two seconds remaining to give Neptune a 2pt win over Big Al's Notre Dame at the National Basketball Arena last night.

It was Fitzgerald’s last game for Neptune for the foreseeable future - he is off to East Timor next week on a tour of duty.

For most of the game Neptune ace Charron Watson dominated the boards at both ends, and he also top scored with 29 points. For Big Al's, as with last season Brandon Hughes starred, but Jenks is still 'the man. He led all scorers until he fouled out with 6.40 remaining

Tolka got off to a blistering start to the season with a big win over pre-season favourites Waterford Crystal. Waterford were without injured American Ryan Gorman, but had hoped the form which saw them defeat Manchester Giants without Gorman last weekend, would seem them safe against Tolka.

But Tolka had an incredible opening 10 minutes that completely took Waterford by surprise. The athletic pairing of Patterson and Smith saw Tolka scoring 40pts in the first quarter, and they never looked back after that. Waterford was left stunned and playing catch up big time – and by half time they trailed by 24pts.

Good baskets from Singleton and Keohane helped Waterford to cut it back to a 19pt gap at the final whistle. A fast start to the game but the energy tailed off at the end.

Frosties Tigers Tralee proved just too strong for SS3 Star, who badly missed injured Gareth Maguire, as well as Kevin Craig and sharp shooter Paul Butler.

Frosties started with the impressive line up of ’96 Player of the Year Ricardo Leonard, and their four new signings American’s Jermaine Turner and Barnaby Craddock and Canadians Paul Willscroft and Austrian Rob Shrurer and that combination proved just too strong for Star to combat.

Tigers led from tip-off and despite good work inside by McGhee and McFarland, they had build up a comfortable 15pt lead by half time. Tigers continued to dominate in the second half, and despite Star’s efforts to cut the deficit, the final result was never in doubt.

Tolka proved that they would indeed be the team to beat this season with an emphatic victory over local rivals Dart Killester. Nicki O’Brien had an excellent return to her old club top scoring on 26pts, and Rachel Kelly was unstoppable inside, she notched up 23pts. A superb first half which saw the home side lead by 7pts set the scene for the second half, which Tolka dominated to run up a 21pt victory in the end.

Match Report:
Glanmire rattle UL in League debut

As expected UL defeated an enthusiastic Glanmire team by 62 points to 52. UL were always in control and did what they needed when they needed to do it. UL got the start they needed and held on to it through out the game. Both teams increased the scoring significantly in the third quarter. Glanmire never gave up and pulled the lead back on several occasions but only ever came as close as 3 points. In the end UL's experience and better discipline carried the day.

Match Report:
Champs hold on against late Meteors rally

Bausch & Lomb Wildcats secured their first win of the season with a 9pt win over old rivals Sasha Meteors in Mercy College Waterford. Michelle Maguire, back after a two year break from the game, got Wildcats off to a flying start and their "small but deadly" team ran up an early 21-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. Good work from the Harvey sisters, Sinead and Ciara (a former Wildcats player) saw the Dublin team cut the deficit in the second quarter, and they brought it back to just 7pts going into the half time break. Wildcats started the third quarter as they had the first, with an awesome display in offence and they had extended their lead to 20pts, 51-31 going into the final quarter. But then the home side hit a wall. The legs went and their shots just would not drop for them, and Meteors kept them scoreless for the first seven minutes of the quarter. In comparison, Meteors just couldn't miss. They hit five three-pointers, three from Catherine O'Sullivan and two from Lisa Timmons to bring it back to a 5pt game with just less than two minutes remaining. But forced to foul to stop the clock, they send Chris Kiely to the line twice in the final minute, the cool headed Wildcats captain coolly slotting home 4 /4 to secure the win for her side, despite that late scare

Last years Cup R-up Longnecks Ballina cruised through the Preliminary Round of games with an unbeaten record to earn themselves a first round tie at home to Frosties Tigers Tralee.
