Derby off the mark

There was no joy for Edinburgh Rocks on their visit to coach Kevin Wall's former club, Derby Storm, in the BBL Championship as the Midlands side grabbed their first victory of the campaign at Edinburgh's expense.

Roy Gardner led all scorers with 18 points but in vain as the hosts squeezed out a 65-64 victory, sealed when both Brendan Graves and Ryan Huntley failed to convert in the final seconds after Derby had grabbed a precious lead through Kevin Griffin with 40 secods left.

Peterson paced the victors with 17 points and 14 rebounds.

In the other Championship tie, London Towers'  72-93 victory over Manchester leaves the Giants with the final winless record in the league. Silas Cheung scored all Towers points in a 10-2 run for the
visitors which put them 41-30 up and in front for good.

John White and Clyde Ellis paced their respective sides with 24 points.

Chester start Trophy defence with win

Holders Chester Jets got their Trophy defence off to a winning start as a 31 point haul from John Thomas paced his side to a 107-87 win at Brighton Bears. The hosts broke open an early stalemate with eight unanswered points but Chester out-scored their opponents 36-17 in the seocnd quarter and a 15-5 run in the third sealed the tie. Albert White hit 19 for Brighton.

Thames Valley Tigers routed Leicester Riders 80-102 but were made to sweat despite a 16-2 burst in the opening stanza. Leicester - sparked by a gamebest 25 point haul from Jermaine Brown - roared back to life with a 13-2 run which levelled matters at 39-39 but an Eric Burks trey on the half-time buzzer restored Tigers cushion and they were never bettered again.

Mike Martin celebrated his England call-up with a team leading 22.
