Newcastle rocked by Berry blast

Newcastle Eagles 69 (19,40,50) (Leak 19, Hyatt 18, Myers 16)
Edinburgh Rocks 76 (13,39,58) (Berry 30, Graves 20, Bunyan 12)

Edinburgh Rocks gained a first road win of the BBL Championship campaign last night, upsetting Newcastle Eagles 76-69 at the Telewest Arena, spurred by a virtuoso 30 point contribution from All Star Ted Berry.

The Scots, coming off a woeful display against Leopards, recovered from a poor start to rattle their hosts, Ted Berry firing eight unanswered points in the second quarter to put Edinburgh in front. There was more to come as Scotland guard Keith Bunyan downed four three-pointers but Newcastle found their range to fight back and snatch a 40-39 half-time lead.

With Eagles' TJ Walker benched with a groin injury, the Rocks punished a wholly lethargic Newcastle after the break, Berry and Brendan Graves combining in a stealthy one-two punch which so nearly floored the Tyneside outfit. A 19-4 burst in an eight minute spell took Kevin Wall's men as
much as 14 ahead but they allowed their cross-border rivals to rebound with 13 straight points
around the third period break before pulling away once more at the close.

Malcolm Leak returned from injury and bagged 19 points for the home side. whose performance was described by coach Tony Garboletto as "the worst since I arrived in Newcastle." Eagles will expect to have Fab Flournoy back for Cup duty against Chester after missing the contest.

Milton Keynes Lions 74 (20,36,57) (Kirk 18, Alleyne 17, Lloyd/Payne 12)
Leopards  77 (17,36,59) (Alderson 20, Brown 18, Robinson 14)

Leopards picked up their second win in a week with a 77-74 success away to Milton Keynes Lions in the BBL Championship on Thursday evening.

The game was close throughout, with the teams tied at 36-36 at half-time. With Lions leading 67-66 with five minutes to go in the game, Leopards hit a 7-1 run to lead 73-68. Lions rallied and a Nigel Lloyd three pointer put Lions 74-73 to the good with less than a minute remaining. A Rod Brown
bucket and two foul shots from Carl Miller reversed the deficit and gave the Leopards the victory. Leopards' Rico Alderson led all scorers with 20 points; Reggie Kirk added 18 for the sixth-placed Lions.
