Eagles soar into Trophy final

Natural Flow Newcastle Eagles will grace the uni-ball Trophy final for the first time in their history next month but they won through to the deciding match the hard way.

Trailing by six points with two minutes left, Tony Garboletto's side made a late charge to steal the match by 87-84, signing off with a jam from TJ Walker as the clock ran down.

The game was a pulsating affair, with Tigers just edging the first quarter 25-22, and although they went more than four minutes without a score from the floor at the start of the second period, Paul James' men still led at the half-time break - 43-40.

There was hardly a thing between the teams in the third quarter, but Eagles just edged it to lead 61-60. Tigers bagged an 8-2 run early in the fourth quarter, but Eagles hit back  to create a tense finale with a 6-0 burst.

Tigers'  John McCord was in great form, finishing the game with 24 points, but in the closing seconds he missed three crucial foul shots, while Brian Ehlers made two to make the game safe. Donnie Johnson led Eagles scoring with 26.

"It's great for our organisation and our players who have worked so hard," stated a delighted Garboletto. "We came out of a war of a game."
