Chester win ugly but advance

Chester will meet Newcastle in the uni-ball Trophy final on March 24, the Jets advancing after their 69-64 defeat of Sheffield in an ugly semi-final encounter to ensure that a new name will be inscribed on the prize this year.

Leading 20-12 late in the first period, the Jets went on a 7-0 burst around the interval to lead by 15, the Sharks cutting the deficit to 34-26 at half-time, mainly through the efforts of Terrell Myers.

An ugly third quarter, characterised by the shots which missed rather than fell allowed Chris Finch's men to close to 48-45 entering the fourth stanza but their opponents were still maintaining control though the inspired guard-play of Joe Daughrity.

However, the Yorkshiremen time and again failed to protect their basket, Chester's ability to gain second chance opportunities so crucial in their success. Sharks slowly clawed their way back and then
reduced the deficit to just one point at 50-49. However Loren Meyer pulled 10 rebounds to go with his team-best 19 points and after adding a field goal, his tip in with 1:30 left put the Northgate outfit up 64-57.

And although Nate Reinking improved Sheffield's miserable tally from beyond the arc with a desperate three pointer with nine seconds left to make it 67-64, Kiwi star Pero Cameron made his fifth foul shot of the final minute to seal the victory.

"We knew they'd come out hard and hungary," said Meyer, "We knew we had to come out the same way. We've been pretty stagnant of late and we had to change that. I think our guards did a good job on Myers and Reinking and we go the breaks towards the end."

Terrell Myers notched 19 for Sheffield who have now lost four consecutive games.
