Newcastle pay back Leopards
Newcastle Eagles defeated London Leopards
87-78 in the third uni-ball trophy quarter-final at the Skydome Arena in
Coventry on Saturday afternoon, atoning for their Cup loss to the Essex
side earlier in the season.
Eagles trailed in the early minutes, but
then netted 13 straight points to lead 22-14 in the first quarter. They
steadily built on that in the second quarter to lead by as many as 13 points,
before Leopards fought back and Maurice Robinson netted a miraculous three
pointer from the halfway line on the buzzer to trail 42-44 at half-time.
Eagles went on to scored nine consecutive
points midway through the third quarter to lead by ten points at 58-48
and hung on for the victory in the final quarter.
Rico Alderson led all scorers, with 22
points for the Leopards to which he added 18 boards, while Brian Ehlers
scored 20 points to lead Eagles scoring.
