There will
be no National Cup three-peat for Sheffield Sharks this season.
Thames Valley Tigers
knocked the holders out at the first round stage on Saturday night, running
out 112-100 winners at Bracknell.
The Tigers posted
bursts of nine and eight without reply in the opening quarter, the latter
giving them a 23-10 lead, which they never
relinquished. However,
Sheffield were not prepared to lie down and provided their hosts with a
late scare, putting together an 4-11 final quarter run to trim the lead
to just seven points at 96-89.
Tigers steadied the
boat by scoring the next six points and making the result certain.
Tigers' Greg Meldrum
and John McCord both scored a game high 29 points, while ex-England veteran
Peter Scantlebury added 22 for Sheffield.
