Leicester Riders
overcame a spirited display by NBL Conference side, Teesside Mohawks, to
win 102-110 at Eston and make it to the quarter-finals of the NTL National
Cup.
Riders had to weather
some serious foul trouble, Billy Singleton fouled out in the third quarter,
whilst Purnell Perry and Larry Johnson were on four fouls going into the
last period, but Riders still had enough in
the tank to win.
They had an especially
good second quarter, outscoring Teesside 29-16 to lead 58-38 at half time.
The shooting of ex-Giants guard Jason Swaine got Teesside back in
the game as they trailed by just six points at 104-98 with two minutes
remaining - but it was not enough, Billy Mims's side secured a first win
of the season.
Corey Jackson, who
played for Birmingham Bullets last season, netted a game-high 36 points
in the game. Johnson with 25 and Reddie Cole on 23 topped Riders offense.
