Solent push Teesside out of title picture
Last placed Solent Stars upset Teesside Mohawks 106-103 on Saturday and likely killed off any hope Tony Hanson's men had of catching first placed Plymouth.
The game started slowly with both teams finding it difficult to shoot accurately. Solent were the first to forge ahead with baskets from Scott and Tripalin, but two three pointers from Bucci and Ley
levelled the scores at 8 - 8 after five minutes. Although Teesside then built on that to lead 16 - 21 by the ninth minute, a late rally by Solent with six unanaswered points gave them a slender one point
lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the first six minutes of the second quarter, Teesside could only add five points to their total as Solent stepped up their defence. At the other end, Alan Cunningham scored eight points as Solent added
14 points in the same time. Solent had their biggest lead by theseventh minute of the second quarter when 18 points separated the teams (44 - 26). Teesside rallied toward the end of the half helped by successive three pointers from Swaine and Ley but Solent still held the upperhand at the interval.
Dennis Ley scored the first eight points of the second half, including two three pointers, as Teesside showed that they were still in the game. Mark Scott and Alan Cunningham then steadied the Solent ship with baskets and defensive rebounds after Solent's lead had been reduced to three points by the fourth minute of the second half (58 -55). Late three pointers by Toby Tripalin and Mark Scott helped restore a ten popint lead at the end of the quarter (81 - 71).
In a storming last quarter, Corey Jackson scored ten consecutive points to help Teesside level the scores at 89 - 89 in the sixth minute. Two minutes later the scores were still level (93 -93) when Duayne Laight scored a three pointer plus one from two from the free throw line for another drive on the basket. Trevor Donaldson added another three pointer in the ninth minute to give Solent a five point
cushion (100 - 95). Four successful free throws by Ralph Bucci brought Teesside to within one point, but Mark Scott put Solent three up with a basket as the game entered the last minute. Dimitry La
Croix missed a shot which led to a Toby Tripalin foul as he attempted to rebound. With both teams on team fouls, Bucci put the two ensuing throws away to make the game a one pointer (102 - 101). With 15
seconds remaing Jason Swaine fouled Trevor Donaldson, who calmly scored both from the line (104 - 101). Bucci immediately drove through to score a lay up but then fouled Alan Cunningham as the ball
was put into play. With 4.2 seconds showing on the clock facing Alan Cunningham he scored both from the line. It was Cunningham also who got a hand to the attempted long pass out of defence by Teesside and the ball fell to Toby Tripalin to play out the remaining few seconds.
