Chester's late, late show overcomes Sharks

Chester Jets proved its not how you start, its how you finish to win the uni-ball Trophy Group A's opening game, defearing Sheffield Sharks 73-75 on Sunday.

The Sharks led 16-2 at the midway point of the first quarter, but Jets - who trailed 45-37 at half-time - steadily chipped away at Sheffield's lead and by the third quarter had  a slender advantage of their own.

Seven unanswered points from Terrell Myers and Nate Reinking appeared to have finished the Jets, as Sheffield led 73-67 with 1.21 left. But Tarik Wallace hit two from the line and then Pero Cameron and Wallace both hit threes in the final minute as Jets netted the game's last eight points to record a dramatic win.

"A good start was vital," admitted a delighted Jets coach Robbie Peers. "I was looking at our group and thinking that if we could finish second, that would be a bonus, because there's Leopards and Brighton, as well as Sheffield in the group.

"Against Sheffield, we dug ourselves a hole and we were in immense trouble, but when it really mattered, defensively we got tough and we hit some big shots. You are going to have to win some games when you don't deserve to win, because we were outplayed, but we showed that we were competitive. My guys don't want to lose."

Wallace led Chester with 22 points while Myers and Zac Bennett had 21 each for the Sharks.
