Stone drops Towers towards NEBL exit

London Towers face an uphill battle if they are to qualify for the play-off semi-finals of the NEBL, after falling to a heavy defeat at the hands of Latvian outfit, Ventspils, in the 1st leg of their quarter-final tie.

Ventspils won 97-70, spear-headed by former Derby Storm guard Kip Stone who top scored with 25 points for the Latvians who avenged a narrow loss to the Londoners from the regular season.

However, it was not until five minutes into the third quarter that Towers began to falter. They trailed by just two points at half-time at 43-41, but turn-overs and a spate of threes from Ventspils put them 11 points behind by the end of the quarter at 62-51. Ventspils then outscored the Towers 35-19 in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Towers coach Nick Nurse admitted the result is likely to end his side's run in the competition

"It was a disaster for our team. We expected to keep the game as close as possible, but once Ventspils handled our first run, they went on and never looked back."

Randy Duck was Towers' best scorer with 24 points.
