Urals too high for Towers to climb

London Towers fell to a disappointing 65-91 defeat at home to Russian side, Ural Great in the Northern European Basketball League on Monday night.

In what was a low scoring affair, the Russians were in control throughout, winning all but the final quarter.

Sergei Chikalkin was the game's top marksman with 23 points, to which Jerry Hester added 17 for the Towers, but 55 points off the Ural Great bench, coupled with 23 turn-overs from the Towers made this a mountain to high for Towers to climb.

Towers assistant Coach Clive Lindo commented: “We were pleased with the guys that came off the bench. During the last 15 minutes of the game they showed some fire, some heart which is what we want from our team.”

Ural guard Tomas Pacesas, whose team now top the standings, admitted that it had been a more comfortable win than he had anticipated.

“It was easy. I don’t know why, but it was an easy game.  The other team was not strong enough. I think we are better in shape, we run, we have faster breaks, more easy shots, we play better defence and I think that is why we have won.”
