NBL Review
Teesside Mohawks returned from a two day road trip shell shocked after defeats at the hands of InterBasket London and Solent Stars. Two close games saw a 112 – 109 and 106 – 103 scoreline respectively and leave the Mohawks adrift of the top spot and the chance of a second consecutive ‘Treble’ even further away.
Sutton Pumas got back to winning ways with a 75 – 63 home victory against Coventry Crusaders and Plymouth Raiders continue to dominate the NBL Conference following an 88 – 76 win at the Velodrome, Manchester.
Oxford Devils remain unbeaten at the top of Men’s Division One. A double header weekend against Westminster Warriors (104 – 79) and Reading Rockets (84 – 75) saw them bag four more points taking them to 14 – 0 run in regular season competition. Reading Rockets also had a double header weekend and despite losing to the Devils, they came out on top in their clash against Birmingham Aces, 97 – 63. Kingston Wildcats put injury worries behind them to record a 104 – 92 win over Liverpool.
Rhondda Rebels demolished St Alban’s Saints 110 – 39 to take a firm hold on the top spot in Women’s Division One. Thames Valley Lady Tigers notched up two wins against Ipswich Bobcats, winning 62 – 61 at home and 81 – 78 away. Sheffield Hatters had similar fortune beating Doncaster Panthers 64 –45 away and 75 – 33 at home. The Panthers are fighting Northampton Cobras, who lost to NW London Amazons 56 – 50, for the final play off spot.
Once again Derbyshire Arrows recorded a convincing victory, beating Taunton Tigers 91 – 58 to stretch the gap at the top of Men’s Division Two. NW London Wolverines upset Mansfield Express 86 – 66 by taking advantage of some great shooting opportunities. Ware Rebels failed to upset Hull Icebergs falling by 12 points 92 – 80 and Brixton Topcats took Doncaster Panthers into over time after finishing 64 – 64 in regulation. The Panthers went on to take the game 80 – 73. Swindon Sonics made a staggering 112 points to Northampton Neptunes 63 in a tense game that saw Northampton Coach Dick Barrett ejected after two technical fouls.
A close game between Tyne and Wear and Derby Ladies saw Tyne and Wear cling onto third place in Women’s Division Two as they extended their 2 point half time lead to 6 with the game closing 78 – 72. Elsewhere in the Division Brighton Magic beat London Towers 62 – 50 and Taunton Tigers had a successful away trip to Chelmsford, 97 – 73.
Worcester Wolves will need to win their two games in hand to keep the pressure on Bristol Bombers. The Bombers travelled to Birmingham Uni and left with a 90 – 74 win and Worcester hosted Barking and Dagenham who worked hard in the second half to chip away at a 15 point half time deficit and despite reducing it to just six points it was the Wolves who closed out the match 69 – 63.
