Plymouth sail into significant advantage

Teesside Mohawks missed out on the road at Plymouth Raiders who now hold a commanding advantage at the head of the NBL Conference. A 77–74 victory for the Raiders leaves a disappointed Teesside 10 points adrift of the top of the NBL Conference and a long journey home. However, Worthing Thunder kept up with the pace by beating Manchester Magic 88 – 75 on the south coast. Coventry Crusaders travelled to InterBasket London for the fourth time this season but it was the London side that had the upper hand, 83 – 71 despite a game-best 29 points from Derrick Pope.

In Men’s Division One, Oxford Devils again broke 120 points beating Birmingham Aces by more than 50 points, 124 – 70. Cardiff Clippers took advantage of Kingston Wildcats’ injury worries to seal a 91 – 87 home win that sees them make third place there own.

Sheffield Hatters and Rhondda Rebels both took advantage of Thames Valley tigers’ weekend off by securing victories against NW London Amazons (92 – 51) and Wandsworth Sting (87 – 73) respectively. Ipswich Bobcats kept a firm hold on fourth place with a 79 – 55 home win against Northampton Cobras and Nottingham Wildcats demolished Coventry Quality Cats, 114 – 42.

A weak third quarter from Mansfield Express twinned with a great fight back from Swindon Sonics meant for a close game at the Mansfield Leisure Centre as the Sonics came back from 41 – 17 down to lose by just seven points, 79 – 72. Ware Rebels put a stop to the progress of Doncaster Panthers with an 88 – 81 win at the home of Yorkshire side. Ealing Tornados, North London Lords, Hull Icebergs and the unbeaten, Derbyshire Arrows, all recorded comfortable home victories to maintain their positions at the top of Men’s Division Two.

Bristol Bombers have opened up the race at the top of Men’s Division Three with a 103 –77 victory at Barking and Dagenham. Nottingham SNC upset the campaign of the Worcester Wolves with a tight 85 – 84 home win at Portland Leisure Centre. A crucial win for Tamar Valley Cannons over Brighton Cougars saw them move away from the basement.

Solent Stars were successful in their bid to reach the Men’s Under 20 National Cup with a 76 – 72 victory over Birmingham Bullets as well as recording victories in the both of the RAF Baden Junior and Cadet competitions. The Juniors beat Southampton Trailblazers 96 – 65 and the Cadet’s beat Gloster Jets 78 – 62.
