Plymouth twosome strengthen lead

A great game between the top teams in Women’s Division Two saw UWIC Cardiff take Plymouth Racers into over time after the game remained level from start to finish. From 32 – 32 at half time the match closed 66 – 66 after regulation. Plymouth worked hard to take advantage of their home court putting on an 18 – 5 run in overtime.

A hectic weekend in the NBL Conference saw four of the eight teams playing double headers. Coventry Crusaders came close, not just once but twice against Worthing Thunder. Level at half time Worthing stole a one point victory at the home of the Midlands outfit whilst on the South Coast they fought back from an 8 point half time deficit to win on home soil. Solent Stars travelled to Manchester Magic on the back of an 85 – 83 victory over InterBasket London only for Manchester to end the Stars’ run of good fortune by beating them 76 – 69. Teesside Mohawks took the points at the Velodrome just 20 hours before beating the Magic 86 – 73.

Sutton Pumas had the daunting task of facing Plymouth Raiders at the Pavilions in front of an amazing 1,280 spectators. Todd Cetnar scored a game high 31 points including six 3 pointers, 11 rebounds and 10 assists to lead his team to a 90 – 62 victory to keep the Raiders clear at the top of the Conference.

Elsewhere in the NBL, Kingston Wildcats fell to a staggering 122 - 80 defeat at the hands of Men’s Division One’s high flyers, the Oxford Devils. Already 20 points down at the half Kingston fought back to close the gap only to let Oxford increase it even more with just three minutes to play. The Wildcats look forward to having Mark Poynton back from injury in time for the play offs. Cardiff Clippers just missed out on closing the gap on Reading Rockets, falling to a 83 – 86 defeat at the Rivermead LC. The game was close throughout with the half time score line at 44 points a piece.

All the games in Women’s Division One went with form, making no changes to the top spots. Rhondda Rebels sealed an 84 – 62 home win against Nottingham Wildcats with Missy Lender making 50% of Rhondda’s points. Thames Valley Lady Tigers cruised to a twenty point win over Spelthorne Acers, 71 – 51 and Sheffield Hatters had a valuable win in the road at Northampton, 84 – 55.

Ealing Tornados broke the 100 mark yet again with a 70-108 away victory over Northampton Neptunes. Hull Icebergs were the only other Division Two outfit to break a century with a 103 – 56 win at Swindon. Both teams will be happy to close the gap on Derbyshire Arrows who did not play this weekend. A close London derby had North London Lords beating Brixton Topcats by just one point (82 – 81) after Brixton fought back from a 14 points half time deficit.
