Plymouth steer course for title

Plymouth Raiders kept up their 100% record in the NBL Conference and go into the Christmas break four points clear at the top of the league after their terrific overtime victory on Teesside. Raiders led from the start and opened up a 25–18 first quarter advantage which they maintained up until the half where they led 42–35.  The Mohawks closed the gap to four points after the third quarter, 66 – 62 and levelled the game at the death, 87 – 87 to force overtime.

The Raiders then assumed control once again as the home side hit foul trouble and a 14 – 5 run in the extra five minutes saw the visitors triumph.  For the victors Canadian Pete Knechtel hit 31 with Todd Cetnar backing him up with 24 whilst for the Mohawks, Ralph Bucci grabbed 32 and Dennis Ley 24.

Mohawks Coach Tony Hanson said: “We had a bad start to the game and were playing catch up from then on.  We’re very disappointed to lose but credit to Plymouth for hanging in there.”  Gary Stronach, Plymouth Coach said: “We beat Teesside on the first day of the season when people said they were weakened by injuries and unavailability.  Today we showed we deserve to be at the top of this league.”

Elsewhere in the Conference Worthing Thunder moved up to second with a win at Manchester whilst Coventry joined the Thunder and Teesside on 10 points by virtue of their success at Inter-Basket London.

Oxford Devils, Derbyshire Arrows and Rhondda Rebels maintained their perfect records in their respective leagues with wins over Birmingham Aces, Hull Icebergs and Ipswich Bobcats respectively.  The Devils have opened up a four point lead at the top of NBL Division One with Coach Bill Baker nurturing hopes of going the whole of the season unbeaten.  Garnet Gayle top scored with 28 points for the Arrows as they notched up their tenth success of the season and with a four point lead over second place Ealing, they look a good bet for promotion to Division One.

Rhondda Rebels lead Thames Valley by two points in Women’s Division One with Sheffield Hatters a further two points behind.  The Rebels overcame Ipswich on Saturday, 72 – 61, with Olga Smirneou hitting 23 for the National Cup finalists.  In Division Two Plymouth Racers maintained their four point lead over UWIC Cardiff at the top of the table with a 67 – 53 success at London Towers, Becky Lear hitting 25 for the Racers.

The National League now goes into a two week Christmas and New Year break with games resuming in all competitions on Saturday January 6th – matches continue as normal in the BBL.
