Raiders rise to top of NBL

Plymouth Raiders soared to the top of the NBL Conference with a narrow 65-68 win at early pacesetters Bupa Coventry Crusaders. The Raiders have a 100% winning record in the Conference, and, added to their four wins out of four in the National Trophy, it all adds up to a splendid start to the season for the West Country outfit.

The Raiders trailed 30-26 at the half but stepped up a gear after half time following a word in their ears from coach Gary Stronach. Todd Cetnar hit 24
for the visitors with Derrick Pope netting 26 for the hosts, who have yet to replace their recent departed import duo.

Elsewhere Teesside Mohawks moved up to second place with a 88–75 win
over Sutton Pumas. The Mohawks’ only loss this season was at Plymouth on the opening day of the season back on September 9th. For the Mohawks Jason Swaine top scored with 24 closely followed by Ralph Bucci with 21.
For the Pumas Alan Hopper contributed 18.

The other game in the Conference saw Worthing Thunder’s gradual improvement this season continue with a well deserved 94 – 84 home success over Inter-Basket London. Top scorer for the Thunder was Vandale Thomas with 26, for the Londoners Rodney Alexander hit 22.

In the last game in the Men’s Trophy pool section, Manchester Magic booked their place in the last eight with a 113–84 win over Birmingham Aces.

Oxford Devils continue their terrific start to the campaign and consolidated
their position at the top of Division One winning 70–90 at Liverpool. Arthur Robinson led all scorers with 21 points. Kingston Wildcats remain tucked inbehind Oxford after winning at 113 – 92 at Birmingham and Westminster
Warriors, boosted by the signings of American duo Dwayne Stallings and Kendall Dancy, lifted themselves two places up the table, and off bottom spot, with a 77 – 69 win over Cardiff Clippers.

In Division Two there was a remarkable end to the game at Swindon where the visiting Taunton Tigers went away with a one point overtime victory, 96–97. Training by two points in the final seconds of overtime,  Swindon’s Mark Taylor was fouled attempting a three point shot as time expired which meant he had three free shots – two would tie the game and three win it, but agonisingly after hitting the first the next two failed to make their mark and the Sonics lost out by one point.

At the top of the table Ealing Tornados and Derbyshire Arrows continue to set the pace, both had home wins at the weekend, Ealing by two over a gallant Ware side and the Arrows, perhaps a little surprisingly, by 26 points over North London.

Hatters, Rhonda stay perfect
In the Women’s Divisions. Sheffield Hatters and Rhondda both kept up their 100% winning records. The Hatters dominated Northampton Cobras winning 82–41 and the Rebels won a tight game on the road at Nottingham 80-92, Missy Lender hitting 34 points for the Welsh outfit.
Wandsworth Sting maintained their fine form, crushing Doncaster 101 –59, with Anastasia Bucknall, wife of Towers’ Steve, top scoring with 32.

In Division Two Plymouth came out on top in the battle of the top two with a magnificent 47-70 success at UWIC Cardiff. Becky Lear top scored with 19 for the Racers.
