Wildcats, Devils into Trophy last eight as Coventry exit

Division One outsiders Kingston Wildcats and Oxford Devils have both defied predictions and made it into the quarter finals of the Men’s National Trophy.

NBL Conference leaders, Coventry Crusaders failed in their bid to take second place in Pool D to a points difference decision as Kingston took the points for the second weekend running with an 88-84 victory at their new home, Tolworth Recreation Centre.

Sutton Pumas were in the same position as Coventry, needing to win to have a
chance of second place in Pool C. Worthing Thunder did not let Sutton take advantage of being on their home court and travelled back to East Sussex with a 12 point win, 70-82 and second place in Pool C.

Plymouth Raiders secured top spot in Pool B on Saturday with a 88–65 victory over Solent Stars. Cardiff Clippers travelled to the South Coast on Sunday but Plymouth continued where they left off on Saturday with a 81–70 success.

Manchester Magic put the pressure on Teesside Mohawks leading them 49–35 at the half. Teesside, the holders, clawed their way back to take the match into overtime at 82–82 and came out victors 99–93.

Three of the NBL Shield quarter finals took place this weekend but Taunton
Tigers look set to go through following the suspension from all competitions of
NW London Wolverines. Birmingham University took Division Two’s North London Lords to the wire in an over time game that saw North London sneek
a 115-109 win to take them into the semi final.

Mansfield Express disposed of Brixton Topcats with a 115–72 result that saw Daniel Richards top score for the weekend with 47 points. Dudley Bears were unsuccessful against Division Two opposition Hull Icebergs as Hull take the last quarter final place, 83–63.

In the league, Ealing Tornados made the short road trip to South London Bulls and proved they are back on form with a 71-93 win. In the only other Men’s Division Two fixture Northampton, now without Mark Spatcher who has joined London Towers, crashed to a 92–43 defeat by Derbyshire Arrows.

Derby Storm’s Division Three team could not mirror the success of their BBL side as they fell to their third defeat in a row at the hands of Brighton Cougars, 99 – 76. Dudley Bears proved hard work for Division Three leaders Barking & Dagenham as they sent them home without the points following a  63–54 win. Tamar Valley remain rooted to the foot of the division as Worcester Wolves continued their run of form to take the top spot with a 72-93 victory.
