Crusaders march to Conference lead
Coventry Crusaders soared to the top of the NBL Conference with a terrific 91-80 win at previously unbeaten Sutton Pumas. Leading the way for the Crusaders was Adam Stephens who bagged a game high 33 points closely followed by Emmanuel Sharland with 20. Pumas’ top scorer was Gareth Laws with 19 points.
Elsewhere in the Conference Teesside scraped home by three points at Inter-Basket London after being 19 points adrift at the half, Dennis Ley and Jason Swaine leading all scorers with 23 points each, Worthing won the battle of the south coast in convincing style coming away from Fleming Park with a 35 point winning margin and Plymouth Raiders, playing only their second Conference game of the season, proved too strong for Manchester Magic running out 77-65 winners to maintain their unbeaten start to their Conference campaign - Todd Cetnar hit 24 for the resurgent Raiders.
In Division One, Oxford Devils maintained their 100% start to the season by overcoming Westminster Warriors 99–71 at the Oxford Brookes Centre, new American signing Todd McNeil contributing 19 points whilst Kingston Wildcats and Birmingham Aces both share second spot after home wins over Liverpool and Reading respectively.
It was cup weekend for the Division Two and Three teams with eight second round ties in the National Shield taking place. Top performers of the weekend were Hull Icebergs who won convincingly on the road at Ware Fire, 102-80 with John Brignell and James Miller both hitting 22 for the visitors – Ware’s Alan Prescott was unlucky to finish on the losing side as he contributed exactly half of his teams’ points.
Other notable wins were achieved by the Brixton Topcats who inflicted on Ealing Tornados their first defeat of the season, 72–64 with Marcus Knight grabbing 30 points and Taunton’s 78-66 win at Doncaster where Graham Jones stunned the home side with 22 points.
