Stars dullened by Mohawks
Round Up

In the NBL Conference, 1999/2000 triple champions Teesside Mohawks picked up their first league points of the season with a convincing 37 point demolition of Solent Stars, Corey Jackson top scoring for the Mohawks with 26 points.  The Stars are rooted at the bottom of the table with Inter-Basket London who were defeated at Sutton.  The Pumas share top spot in the table with Coventry Crusaders who had a narrow six point victory over Manchester Magic.

The NBL Division One, after only six matches, there is remarkably only one unbeaten side in the Division, proof if any was needed that this league will be very tightly contested as the weeks roll on.  Oxford Devils hold that distinction with Westminster Warriors conversely being the only team in the league without a win.  Liverpool’s 20 point win at home to the Warriors with Dsango Walker top scoring on 20 points was probably the performance of the weekend in the division.

Down in Division Two, Ealing Tornados were foiled at Swindon when their game was abandoned with 5.09 left on the clock with a 84 – 47 lead in their pockets.  The culprit appears to have been Tornados forward Mark Quashie who brought the ring down after an elaborate dunk.  Ealing still share top spot in the league though, a position they hold jointly with Hull Icebergs who picked up their second consecutive win – this time defeating Mansfield Express 88 -81.  Tarryn Algar grabbed a game high 24 points for the Icebergs.  In Division Three, two teams maintain 100% records, Barking & Dagenham who have three wins and Thames Valley Tigers with two, both enjoyed home wins.  Spare a thought though for Brighton Cougars, who due to a variety of circumstances, have yet to set foot on court this season.

The Women’s Division One has four teams with 100% records after two games played.  Sheffield Hatters and Rhondda Rebels are as expected up at the top but they are joined by Nottingham Wildcats and Wandsworth Hurricanes who have both started the season with a bang.  Nottingham are led by England Junior Women’s Coach Michael Ball who has instilled great team discipline into his side whilst the Hurricanes are coached by the redoubtable Andrea Norton whose side play an all-action exciting style of basketball.  In Division Two, Plymouth Racers, who were relegated from the top flight last season, are looking to bounce back at the first time of asking and have opened their season with three straight wins – helped by Canadian import player Rita Rieksts.

Next weekend the Men’s National Trophy competition swings back into action with most teams playing their second pool game in the competition.  It’s early days so far in the Trophy where the 15 teams are divided up into four pools playing on a home and away basis with the top two from each pool progressing to the knock-out quarter final stage. The pick of the fixtures sees Conference outfit Worthing Thunder travelling to Division One Oxford and the all Conference clash between Manchester and Teesside.

The Men’s National Cup, sponsored by NTL, also tips off next weekend with the first of the eight Round One fixtures.  BBL outfit Birmingham Bullets, who top the BBL’s Southern Conference, play host to Solent Stars on Sunday evening at Aston Villa where the visitors will be up against it, a shock result is always possible but perhaps this time around it is asking too much for the Stars, three times winners of the Cup in their proud history, to come up with goods.

For the clubs in the Men’s Division Two and Three, it is the opening round of the NBL Shield, which effectively is their own knock-out cup competition.  The London derby between North and South London at Harrow looks particularly appetising with Colchester’s visit to Ware also looks a good bet for a tightly fought encounter.

The Women’s NBL clubs are taking part in the first round of the Women’s National Cup.  In the early stages of the competition, most of the Division One clubs have received byes although Doncaster and St Albans must see off London Towers and Plymouth respectively if they are to progress into the next round.  In the League only one game is taking place – at Ipswich where the Bobcats face the daunting prospect of taking on league Champions Sheffield Hatters.
