What on
earth is going on at Leicester ? First the provincial yokels have the gall
to win a Cup. Now they've over-stepped the mark by beating those powerhouse
tyros Chester.
But there was no
mistaking the Riders' class on Saturday as they delivered a 109-101 reverse
to the Jets who missed their expected chance to return to the top of the
Northern standings. The result moves Billy Mims' side to within two points
of the play-off places and their challengers Manchester in the race for
what is likely to be a two-way battle for fourth spot.
The game was close
in the early stages, before Riders hit a 9-0 run to lead 30-21 at the end
of the first quarter. Chester rallied, before Ralph Blalock hit eight points
in quick succession to put Riders 40-33 ahead.
Chester were also
stung by the loss of star centre, Loren Meyer, who fouled out in the second
quarter, with five
fouls, including two technicals. Jets hit a 6-0 run in the third quarter
and then
a 10-0 tear early
in the fourth, which put them 81-77 into the lead, but Riders hit back
with 9
unanswered points
to lead 86-81 and they didn't trail again.
Malcolm Leak top
scored with 31 points for Riders, Pero Cameron leading the Jets with 23.
