Riders launched an amazing comeback to defeat Pertemps Bullets Birmingham
118-109 in overtime in the NTL National Cup to progress through to the
semi-finals.
Bullets - on their
own court - enjoyed the better of the first half and led 58-43 at half
time, but an 18-4 run by the Riders in the third period saw them come back
into the game at 74-67.
They clawed their
way back further and in the fourth quarter, they stole ahead at 86-88.
It remained tight for the rest of regulation time but Lance Randall's side
needed a three-pointer from Yorick Williams on the buzzer to force overtime.
However Riders, who
were led by Purnell Perry's game-high 28 points, showed more offensive
strength in the extra period and they ran out winners.
Winning coach Billy
Mims praised his team for the manner of their fightback.
"I questioned their
heart," he said. "I challenged them to show me some guts and they did.
They proved that they have a lot of heart.
"We turned it around
in the third quarter because we became the aggressors. We were more explosive
and it got to the Bullets because they got into foul trouble."
"I've seen some great
comebacks in my time and that must rank alongside the best. The Riders
are the comeback kids."
Brant Bailey and
Williams each notched 25 for the ousted Bullets.
