ESB National Cup – The Event
? The ESB National Cup is the highlight of the Irish Basketball season, attracting capacity crowds and live television coverage for the finals weekend at the National Basketball Arena in January.
? Including the Senior and Junior Cups, over 100 teams begin the competition with the best 16 making it to the “Finals” weekend for the Semi-Finals in four categories.
? The Arena is at full capacity over the entire weekend with an excess of 10,000 fans passing through the doors.
? The Sprite Cup Weekend has been a sell out for the past three years. Demand for the 2000 final was so high that double the Arena capacity (2,500) could have been filled.
? The two Senior Men’s Semi-Finals and the Senior Men’s final are broadcast live on Network 2. A highlights package from the Senior Women’s Semi-Finals and finals is broadcast the day after the final.
? Three radio stations broadcast live from the 2000 finals weekend. Four other radio stations broadcast a mix of pre-recorded and live reports.
Sprite National Cup – The History
? The modern National Cup was first launched in 1983 and the first “Cup Weekend” held in April 1984 in the Oblate Hall in Inchicore.
? St. Vincent’s (Dublin) were the first winners of the Cup.
? In 1985, the Cup weekend moved to the new Neptune Stadium in Cork.
? RTE first broadcast the National Cup in 1985.
? Calor Kosangas became the first Cup sponsor in 1985.
? The National Cup became the ICS cup in 1988 with Neptune claiming their second cup title in that year.
? Sprite took over sponsorship of the cup in 1992, and St. Vincent’s were the first Cup champions under the Sprite sponsorship.
? In 1999, both Senior Finals were decided by a single point, Tolka Rovers edging out Waterford Wildcats in the Women’s event, and Denny Notre Dame beating Esat Telecom Demons on the buzzer in the Men’s event.
? The 2000 finals were also close affairs, Waterford Wildcats came back to claim the cup with a 52-51 defeat of Meteors, while in Denny Notre Dame claimed an historic 4th consecutive cup win with a 69-67 defeat of St. Vincent’s on the final buzzer.

Senior Men
? The Senior Men’s cup is an open draw.
? 16 teams will compete in Round 1 on 21/22 October.
? The 8 winning sides go through to the quarterfinals on 9/10 December.
? The final four teams go through to the Cup weekend on 26-28th January 2001Senior Women
? The Senior Women is a seeded draw.
? There are 8 teams involved this year.
? The Women’s Cup goes straight to quarterfinals.
? The draw will take place after Round 1 of the Men’s Cup.U19 Men and Women’s National Cup
? There are four pools in both the U19 Men’s and Women’s National Cup.
? The winner from each pool goes through to the semi-finals in the National Basketball Arena in January 2001.
? The Pool competitions take place on 18th/19th November (Women) and 2nd/3rd December (Men)U19 Men’s and Women’s Regional Cup
? There are three Regional Cup Championships for both Men’s and Women – South, NorthWest and NorthEast.
? There is a champion crowned from each region.
? The Regional Champion goes forward to the National Basketball Arena on 17th December to decide the Overall Regional Cup Champion.
? The U19 Men’s Regional Cup takes place on 18th/19th November
? The U19 Women’s Regional Cup takes place on 4th/5th November
