The Irish Basketball National Executive Appeals Committee met on Wednesday after the Dublin club appealed the decision to abandon the league without awarded the title to the runaway leaders.
The review committee upheld the ending of the season due to the foot and mouth crisis but overturned the earlier decision on the league crown, ensuring that Killester will be inscribed as the rightful victors for this term.
In a statement, the IBA revealed that the move came because:
- If all teams who were in contention at the time of the abandonment were brought forward to a position of having played 23 games (with wins being awarded to all but Killester - being awarded losses) THORN Killester would still be clear leaders.
- 90% of the ESB Men’s League had been completed at the time of the abandonment.
- A precedent confirmed by FIBA is in existence.
