Irish Men's League

24 Connect Star of the Sea 72 (43) 80 (36) Thorn Killester

BurgerKing Limerick 96 (46) 92 (51) O’Hagan Saints
W McFarland 30 29 P Shuttlesworth
T Walsh 26 20 C Doyal
M Hall 6 18 D Donnelly
The first quarter started basket for basket. Limerick took this first scrappy quarter 25-20 with William McFarland outscoring the Dublin side. O’Hagan Saints welcomed the return of Karl Donnelly, one of the starting five, but Donnelly never really got into the game.

The first few minutes of the second quarter saw Limerick’s lead stretch further as the Saints seemed unable to work the ball. A time-out four minutes into the game seemed to work wonders on the Saints and Chris Doyal and Stephen McGuirk brought Vincent’s back into the game to give them the second quarter, 51-46.

The third quarter saw the turning point of the game when Limerick took a lead of thirteen points, a lead that Saints were never to retrieve. In the first three minutes, Saints picked up three fouls sending Limerick to the free throw line. Saints had a number of turnovers that Limerick used to their advantage to leave Saints trailing. Limerick’s Tommy Walsh had a tremendous game, both offensively and defensively, scoring big baskets throughout the period. With the help of Matthew Hall and McFarland, the Saints were kept out of the game for most of the third quarter. Saint’s Pierre Shuttlesworth tried desperately to keep the Dublin side in touch but seemed to be on his own in doing so. O‘Hagan Saints trailed by 13pts going into the final quarter 69-80.

Chris Doyle and Stephen McGuirk came into the final quarter fighting together taking a number of unanswered scores. With six minutes on the clock, the Saints had brought the game back to eight points, when a foul on Dave Donnelly sent him to the line. Donnelly missed both vital baskets, but a turnover by Saints saw Doyal take yet another basket. With three minutes on the clock a three pointer by Joe Kilroy brought Limerick back on track. Dave Donnelly was fouled and this time made both shots to bring the game within 5pts. William McFarland fouled out with three minutes on the clock, with Robert Lynch following shortly afterward. With 2mins 15secs on the clock a three pointer by Stephen McGuirk brought the Saints within two points and a foul by Dave Barry sent Doyal to the line. Doyal made both shots to make the game even. However Saints were never to take the lead, and a basket from Tommy Walsh and a foul on Matthew Hall ensured Limerick’s victory. A last minute 3 point attempt by Stephen McGuirk was to no avail and Limerick took victory 96-92.

Waterford Crystal 75 (39) 84 (46) Big Al’s Notre Dame
E Blair 25 35 A Jenkins
L Hunt 21 30 B Hughes
M Norris 12 9 T McDonagh
Big Al’s took an early lead 5-0, but Crystal came back with seven unanswered points. The remainder of the first quarter was basket for basket with Waterford leading 22-21 going into the second.

Big Al’s controlled the second quarter, upping their defence to minimise Waterford’s attempts. Notre Dame had a 7-point lead going into half time thanks to another outstanding performance by Anthony Jenkins who scored 25 points in the first half.

The third quarter saw Big Al’s extend their lead to 14 points, however Waterford battled hard and with good teamwork by Eric Blair and Lester Hunt, managed to bring the game back to 3pts going into the final quarter down 57-54.

The final quarter was basket for basket, Big Al’s increasing their lead to eight points. With one minute on the clock, Waterford were down 70-75, and a foul had Mike Norris on the free-throw line. Norris made one basket to bring the game within 4pts. Brandon Hughes came back with a basket and received a free throw to make it 78-71. With 20 seconds on the clock Waterford had an expensive miss and the rebound went to Big Al’s with Hughes being fouled. Hughes made two from two to make increase the Dublin lead to 82-72. Brandon Hughes had an outstanding second half scoring a total of 20 points in that time.

Frosties Tigers 86 (41) 73 (34) Gleneagle Killarney
R Leonard 37 29 M Carter
R Turner 21 20 W Maysfield
R Patterson 12 10 S Horgan
Ricardo Leonard started well scoring 12 points in the first quarter, with Killarney’s Shane Horgan keeping them in touch and winning them the first quarter 16-17.

Frosties Tigers took the lead for the first time in the second quarter, with Robbie Turner being inspirational against his former team mates. Tralee went into half-time leading 41-34, at which time it was all over for Killarney.

The third quarter saw William Maysfield and Maurice Carter try desperately to bring Killarney back but to no avail and Tralee ran out easy winners 86-73

Tyrone Towers 93 (44) 97 (48) Neptune
C Mason 25  32 C Watson
JL Supervia 23 23 A Meyers
G Turner 18 10 S McCarthy
Tyrone Towers pushed Neptune to the limit in a packed gym in Dungannon. The lead changed hands a number of times throughout the game although Neptune led at the end of each quarter. Charles Mason had an outstanding game for Dungannon, but it was not enough to lift Tyrone Towers from the bottom of the league table.

The final quarter almost led to a shock victory for Dungannon, with ten seconds remaining and Dungannon trailing by two points. A foul by David Morrell sent Dave Downey to the line. Downey hit two from three to increase the Neptune lead and it was too late for Dungannon.

Esat Business Demons 97 (55) 55 (29) Tolka Rovers
T Carberre 31 16 T Smith
J Wiley 24 13 P Boylan

J Wiley 23 23 P Shuttlesworth
T Carberre 21 13 C Doyal
H Iturralde 6 12 D Donnelly
Demons were unlucky to end this one on the wrong side of the scoreline, but O’Hagan Saints will be grateful for the much needed victory. The first quarter was basket for basket with nothing between the sides. The second quarter was also even, with both teams Americans’ working hard for their sides. Saints came out better in the second quarter and went into half time leading 41-34.

The third quarter saw Demons take the lead, one which they retained until eight minutes into the 4th quarter. Juan Wiley fouled out with six minutes to play and was a huge loss to the Cork side. The last quarter was nip and tuck all the way, with Stephen McGuirk fouling out with three minutes to go. Pierre Shuttlesworth had an outstanding performance to give St Vincent’s one victory this weekend.

24 Connect Star of the Sea  93 (43) 92 (59) Neptune
G Jackson 24 31 C Watson
G McGuire 17 15 A Meyers
G Connolly 16 11 S McCarthy
Neptune looked to be the undisputed victors going into half-time with a 16pt lead. However Star of the Sea came back in the third quarter, to see a major turnaround. Neptune seemed tired in the third quarter and Star’s Gary Connolly and Gab Jackson took every opportunity. Star upped their defence and a number of fast breaks, steals and turnovers and with Gerard Ryan coming off the bench to hit a number of big three pointers, the Northerners took a one-point lead going into the final quarter.

The final quarter was basket for basket, at times Neptune looked that they might just steal a victory. Kenny McFarland fouled out for Star with four minutes on the clock, but another three-pointer from Gerard Ryan kept Star in touch and with a less than a minute to go Scott Summersgill hit a vital three pointer to keep it a point between the sides. With second on the clock Neptune were up 92-91, but with four seconds on the clock Gabe Jackson hit a basket for Star to give them one victory this weekend.

Burger King Limerick  113 (59) 90 (47) Abbey Foods Sligo
W McFarland 33 32 D Halbauer
T Walsh 22 24 D Shoultz
R Lynch 19 13 S McCarthy
In a rather uninspiring encounter in the University Arena, BurgerKing Limerick picked up their second victory of the weekend. The first quarter was basket for basket ending 25-24 in Limerick’s favour. The second quarter saw Limerick pick up the pace and showing through as the stronger side. Tommy Walsh shone in the third quarter with a number of steals and generally having an outstanding game. Limerick were up 20pts going into the final quarter and played the bench for the last ten minutes. Despite grave attempts by Davour Halbauer and Scott McCarthy to bring Sligo back in to the game in the final quarter, Limerick were by far the superior side. Limerick’s John Galvin fouled out with three minutes to go and Ian McMorrow fouled out for Sligo one minute into the final quarter.

Bausch & Lomb Wildcats 70 (26) 42 (14) Tolka Rovers
J Hayes 27 14 S Kelly
O O’Reilly 18 8 S Maguire
K Fitzpatrick 6 8 V Burke
When these teams meet it is always basket for basket and tight until the very end, however Wildcats defense got the better of Tolka Rovers to put them out of victory early on in the game. Wildcats trailed 8-4 after 5 minutes, but a run of scores by Jillian Hayes and gave them the lead and the first quarter 11-10.

The second quarter saw Wildcats come into their own with Olivia O’Reilly and Jillian Hayes showing outstanding skill and their combination gave Wildcats the lead 26-14 in a ver low scoring first half.

Tenacious defense in the third quarter denied Tolka every opportunity, while Waterford’s offence left them leading by 24 points going into the final quarter. Tolka Rovers managed a mere four points in the final quarter.

By the final quarter it was all over for Tolka Rovers and now Wildcats leap in front of the league table.

Bausch & Lomb Wildcats 46 (19) 43 (20) Thorn Killester
C Kiely 17 18 E Brophy
J Hayes 18 10 C Kissane
O O’Reilly 7 7 E Pearse
A game in which Killester were unlucky not to win, having lead for the majority. With two minutes 20 secs to go, Killester led by 5 points. Jillian Hayes hit a basket to bring the game within 3pts. Killester missed an important basket, and the rebound led to Olivia O’Reilly hitting 2 to bring Wildcats up by a point. A foul on Hayes sent her to the line, to make two from two to clinch victory over a newly charged Killester side. Newcomer Hope Maynard is a big asset and has added a wealth of confidence to Killester. She is unlikely to light up the league, but is a big defensive player and with her on side, we are likely to see Killester pick up some points in the coming weeks.
