In their best
performance of the season, Esat Telecom Demons shocked the crowd at Parochial
Hall by becoming the first team in the ESB League to defeat big Al’s Notre
Dame this term. Demons lead from the beginning, up 7 points going into
half-time. Tobe Carberre is the star of Demons after his superb performance
that electrified the crowd. Carberre scored five ‘slam-dunks’ two of which
were reverses. Demons held the lead and were up 8 points going into the
last quarter. Big Al’s brought it back to three with two minutes to go,
but Brian Clernon hit a three-pointer from the base to put the Cork side
5 ahead. Notre Dame’s Anthony Jenkins fouled out in the last minute, at
which stage it was well and truly over for Big Al’s. |

Hibernian UCD
Marian seemed the likely victors until the end of the third quarter in
a close and exciting game. Marian led 26-15 at the end of the first quarter
and maintained their lead to stay up 7 points going into half-time. O’Hagan
Saints battled to win the third quarter, up 4 points with ten minutes to
play. Stephen McGuirk lit up the third quarter hitting four outstanding
three-pointers. The last quarter proved fatal to UCD Marian, having nine
consecutive fouls called on them to bring O’Hagan saints to the free-throw
line. The Saints edged out in front in the last three minutes to grasp
a 5 point victory. |

Inspired by
a match MVP Tliotis Brown, BurgerKing Limerick proved too strong for Gleneagles
in Killarney on Saturday night. The free scoring Brown had 48 points including
five three-pointers and the Limerick side were never really troubled. Seventeen
first quarter points helped limerick to a 29-34 lead while Maurice Carter
and David Griffin tried hard for Killarney. Limerick’s other American Lance
Barnes also made his mark as Limerick went 41-29 clear and they led 48-38
at half-time.
Burger King Limerick enjoyed 11 three-pointers
in this match and started the second half with threes from Stephen Kelly
and Mark Hall to race into a 59-42 lead. They never looked back after this
and were 74-59 in front entering the final quarter. Gleneagle’s William
Maysfield managed a mere four points in the first half but replied with
21 in the second half. Unfortunately it was too little too late for the
home team. With the help of Tliotis Brown, Limerick continued to dominate
and ran out easy winners with 21 points to spare in the end. |

Neptune started
quicker then Tigers and took the lead in the first quarter, finishing 12-10.
Tralee were without the 6’6’’ Irish forward Michael Quirke, and he was
sorely missed. Neptune’s Charron Watson was scoring free and easy baskets
for Neptune as Tigers were slow off the mark. Tigers brought the game to
62-65 with 2 minutes left on the clock but that was as close as the game
got. John Teahan had a superb game for Frosties Tigers but, Neptune’s Stephen
McCarthy got MVP of the game. |

A delayed start
due to a leaking roof in DCU, the game was relocated to the Saints old
gym, St Vincents.
O’Hagan Saints had a great start, finishing
the first quarter up 7 points, at 23-16. They were in control from the
very beginning, controlling defensive rebounds despite Killester’s big
line-up with the towering Westbrooks, Jackson and Leahy. Killester were
down 10 points going into half-time and at one point during the third quarter,
O’Hagan Saints had increased their lead to 20. In the final quarter Killester
increased the pressure and brought the game back to 11 points. It wasn’t
to be for Killester on the day and O’Hagan Saints had a comfortable but
deserved win. |

The game was
tight throughout, Tolka’s biggest lead was at half time, finishing 8 points
up. Randall Mounts, just back from injury, was fouled out in the third
quarter but Tolka’s Irish contingent raised their game. With a minute and
a half left on the clock Waterford had a 2 point lead that was leveled
each time with Tolka’s next offence. Eric Blair was fouled with 9 seconds
remaining on the clock at which time the teams were tied. Blair missed
both free throws. Tolka got the rebound and went up the court with Eoin
Quill taking the drive. Under pressure, Eoin missed, but his brother Jim
was there to tip in the rebound. With one second remaining, Waterford were
unable to score, to give Tolka Rovers a narrow victory. |
