Tolka Rovers 85 (44) 84 (48) Star of the Sea J Fazande 24 30 G Jackson D Edge 16 17 K McFarland J Aurojo 13 13 T Smullen In a game that had the crowd on their feet, Tolka Rovers snatched a defeat from Star of the Sea in a game that could have gone either way. The game was close throughout Star leading at the end of the first and second quarters. In the third quarter Tolka Rovers led by 9 points but in only 90 seconds Star brought it back to 1 point. The third quarter finished 66-63 in Tolka’s favour. The last quarter was nip and tuck all the way. With 3 seconds to go Star went to the free throw line and made two of two to lead 84-83. Jay Fazande took the ball to the top of the court and a back door pass to Spaniard Javier Aurojo who on the buzzer, dropped it in Tolka’s basket, to give Tolka Rovers a close victory.
Abbey Foods Sligo 82 (44) 95 (55) Neptune D Halbauer 30 27 C Watson C Holmes 14 18 S McCarthy P Bree 11 15 B Finley Sligo started game strongly, yet Neptune finished the first quarter leading 29-27. Neptune were the stronger team throughout the game and had the better of Abbey Foods Sligo up until the third quarter. Sligo’s new signing, Croation Davor Halbauer opened up the game for Sligo and shot eight 3pointers in the course of the game. In the final quarter with 2.50 remaining on the clock Sligo returned and were within 3 points of the Cork side. In the remaining minutes, Sligo were to score no more, while Neptune edged ahead from the free throw line and grabbed a well deserved 13 point victory. Sligo’s Fergal Kelly returned this weekend having been out injured for the last two years. He had a big impact on the game and will be a great asset to the side in the coming weeks.

Burger King Limerick 86 105 Big Al’s Notre Dame T Brown 27 34 B Hughes L Barnes 26 32 A Jenkins T Walsh 11 18 L McMillan BurgerKing Limerick will be hoping that their first game in their new premises will not be a bad omen for the remainder of the season. The University Arena, only completed last week, had a great crowd for it’s premier basketball performance. The teams shared a close first quarter, Big Al’s Notre Dame leading 20-18. By the end of the third quarter, Notre Dame led by 24 points. BurgerKing Limerick had a generally poor performance game, particularly the third quarter when their shooting was particularly lacking at only 28%. Throughout the game their defence was no match for the American duo, Brandon Hughes and Anthony Jenkins. Tliotis Brown picked up three fouls early in the first half and was cautious for the remainder.
The University Arena is yet to be established as Burger King Limerick’s ‘home’ gym. Their new American signing, Barnes, played the game directly off the flight and couldn’t sustain the 40 minutes.
It might be a different story in a couple of weeks time when both teams meet again for the quarter finals of the cup. Limerick will have adjusted to their new premises and can enjoy the advantage of home territory and Barnes will be a fitter counterpart for Notre Dame.
Frosties Tigers 99 (42) 83 (59) Waterford Crystal R Leonard 33 31 S Massiah R Turner 29 28 E Blair J Teahan 15 13 D Kavanagh The game started basket for basket until midway through the second quarter when Waterford Crystal took off. They finished the second quarter 17 points ahead and had the game well in control. Waterford self-destructed in the third quarter, scoreless for the first eight minutes. Tralee took every advantage and managed 11 unanswered points to bring Waterford within 6 points.
The final quarter started with Crystal 7 points up, but they failed to score in the final 3 minutes of the game to hand over victory to the Tigers.
Rikardo Leonard appears to have recovered from a hamstring injury that kept him out of the game in Tralee’s Cup defeat last weekend. Waterford Crystal managed to control Leonard in the first half of the game, but as Tralee’s confidence grew, so did Rikardo’s and he dictated the second half of the game.
Tyrone Towers 84 (38) 105 (54) Thorn Killester J Turner 39 25 E Jackson JL Supervia 22 17 D Sealy C Mason 19 16 J Leahy Although Killester deserved to win, the 21 points that separated the teams on the final buzzer hardly justifies the effort put in by the Towers. The game was effectively won in the second quarter when Towers lost their way and Killester pulled ahead, without Adrian Fulton who sat out most of the quarter. With Sealy filling his role admirably and Leahy hitting a purple patch, the Dublin side ended the second quarter with a 16 point advantage, 54-38. Killester found Jermaine Turner a handful throughout the game as his 39 point haul would suggest. Although without a win so far this season, Towers performance may suggest that this is about to change. Killester displayed a polished performance and will not be far from the final shake-up at the end of the season.

Bausch & Lomb Wildcats 73 (40) 70 (31) Tolka Rovers C White 15 20 S Kelly O O’Reilly 14 11 R Kelly J Hayes 11 7 L O’Brien Irish International Suzanne Maguire’s come-back to Tolka Rovers didn’t bring them the result they needed. In a sizzling game that had the crowd at the edge of their seats, B & L Wildcats grabbed victory in the final seconds to keep them on top of the ESB Women’s league table and the only unbeaten team this season. The game was close throughout, Wildcats leading 18-8 at the end of the first quarter. Jillian Hayes dominated the first 5 minutes of the game, scoring a total of nine points, but declined thereafter, the ‘flu taking its toll.
Tolka Rovers trailed by nine points going into half time, and came back to reduce their deficit to one point at the end of the third quarter, 50-49. Midway through the final quarter, Wildcats were up 16 points, until Tolka hit three three-pointers. An amazing two came form Elaine Kelly, the third from Suzanne Maguire. With one minute to go Tolka brought the game back to three points, sending Wildcats to the free throw line after a series of careless fouls. Wildcats missed 5 from 6 free shots.
With 12 seconds remaining on the clock Tolka Rovers hit a three pointer that bobbed back out of the basket. Unbelievably Denise Walsh’s second attempt at a three pointer went the same way, into the basket and back out.
In the end Waterford took a well deserved win to keep them on top.
