Haribo London Towers' bright start to the Euroleague campaign took a reverse step on Wednesday night on Italy as the BBL representatives were comprehensively beaten 102-76 by Muller Verona at the PalaOlimpia.
The visitors led briefly 2-6 early on but the hot shooting hosts soon took control, ending the first period 23-17 ahead, their cushion growing to ten at half-time.
Nick Nurse's men could not reduce the gap as Verona's permieter shooting took them further ahead, and despite Kendrick Warren's game-best 24 points, they dropped to 1-1.
"I thought we were headed in the right direction there," remarked Nurse. "We cut the thing back to ten at the half. We got it inside nine with two minutes to go in the third and just had a collapse at the end of the quarter, which kind of
sealed the game.
"These teams are big time, no question about it. They're on their own floor, they're deep, they're big and they're skilled. We're going to have to play to our best. I'm not saying we have to match up with them person for person, but our guys need to play their best."Louis Bullock top scored for Verona with 20.
Elsewhere in Group D, Frankfurt Skyliners remained winless after their 79-94 home defeat to KK Buducnost, while Barcelona suffered a surprise 58-67 loss to PAOK at the Blaugrana, the Greek now holding sole possession of the group lead.
