London pride intact despite narrow loss to Barca

Having already sealed their exit from the Euroleague, there wasn't much at stake for Nick Nurse's London Towers at the Blaugrana on Thursday night. Except pride.

And the British outfit certainly left Catalonia with that intact, despite a 82-76 loss which left their hosts clear atop Group D.

However Towers were a minute away from the shock result of the season, before the European giants snatched victory from their grasp.

After a slow start, the Londoners rallied in the second to close to 44-37 at half-time and by the end of the third quarters, they had levelled the game at 56-56. Eric Taylor and Randy Duck put Towers 66-72 ahead with 2 minutes left, but Barcelona scored the next nine points to lead 75-72.

Eric Burks had the chance to level the game at the line, but missed the first of his three free throws with 12 second left and Barcelona sneaked the win from the line.

Arturas Karnisovas and Juan-Carlos Navarro hit 16 apiece for Barca while Duck led all scorers with 22, Tom Wideman adding 15.

In the other Group D matches played this week, PAOK romped to a 89-72 win over Buducnost whileVerona overcame Frankfurt 90-70.
