Edinburgh
Rocks turned up at Meadowbank on Friday night. But not to play.
The Scots, coming
off a first win for three months in the BBL, were utterly thrashed by Chester
Jets, the Northern Conference leaders coming away with a 66-105 victory.
It was men against
boys throughout, the visitors firing 16 of the first 20 points to establish
their supremacy. Sparked by excellent team-play and another virtuoso showing
from ex-NBA centre Loren Meyer - the game's top scorer with 26 points -
, the Jets rattled off 18 unanswered points in the second period to building
a convincing cushion before the hosts hit a 15-0 spurt to head into the
interval trailing 29-50.
That momentum failed
to carry through the break as Chester hit irresistible form. A further
0-16 burst eventually took Robbie Peers' men into a 35-74 lead and although
they eased off in the latter stages, two late three pointers from reserve
Paul Singer ensured that their lead against the wholly lacklustre hosts
peaked at 41 just before the finish.
Ted Berry led Edinburgh
with 18 while James Hamilton added 23 for Chester.
Along with injured
Rock Winston, Rocks coach Iain Maclean sat out the game, clearly signalling
his weekend's priorities lie with Saturday's encounter with Brighton Bears
on the south coast.
The Southern Conference's
bottom side have won only four games all season, one coming versus Edinburgh,
but despite the poor form of both teams, Maclean dismisses suggestions
that his improving side is guaranteed a victory.
"People might expect
us to get a win against Brighton but they will be looking at our record
and expect the same thing," he said. "We're a quicker side now though than
when we last met them and I think that will cause them problems."
