After the Rose Bowl
on Wednesday was this the Wooden Spoon Cup?
Brighton Bears broke
their BBL Championship duck at the fifth time of asking on Friday night
at Meadowbank, taking Edinburgh Rocks to two periods of overtime before
winning out 91-93 in a dramatic conclusion.
However neither side
could take much credit from their performances, repeated errors and poor
shooting the principal feature of the contest between two teams surely
destined for mediocrity this term.
"We didn't play well
but I feel good about the win but hopefully it will give us extra confidence
and momentum," said a delighted Bears coach Mark Dunning. "We know we have
a decent team although we haven't got delusions of grandeur. We work hard
in practice and our aim is still to make the play-offs."
The hosts should
have seized control of the game as they dominated the first half, their
lead midway through the second quarter peaking at 38-24. But Brighton’s
relentless pressure slowly trimmed the deficit, a 8-0 burst from the visitors
leaving the Scots only 40-35 ahead at half-time.
Continued sloppiness
from Greg Lockridge’s men allowed the Southern Conference outfit to re-take
the initiative in the third period but as the lead changed hands several
times, it required a single free throw from Kevin Wallace to send the match
into overtime at 71-71.
The Rocks should
have capitalised when they hit eight unanswered points when play re-started.
But after the initial
extra period ended at 81 apiece, too many misses from the foul strip let
Brighton nudge in front, their final score a single free throw from Michael
Brown which took his game-high tally to 29 which forced a desperation long-range
effort at the buzzer from Ted Berry which fell far short.
"We had the game
in our hands many times and we threw it away," conceded Lockridge. "We
have to take a long hard look at everything from top to bottom. It was
a matter of who wanted it most tonight and I'm not sure that was us."
