Pertemps Bullets
Birmingham picked up a 95-103 victory over Edinburgh Rocks on Sunday night
but required a last gasp surge to overcome the BBL Championship's worst
team. A brilliant 37 points haul from All-Star Brant Bailey stood out,
but Lance Randall's side - who stay fourth in the Southern Conference standings
- required the final 12 points of the contest to shake off their unusually
inspired hosts.
Although Bullets
held a one point cushion after the first quarter, they were all at sea
for much of the match as Edinburgh, sparked by Jo-Jo Chambers, ripped their
guests apart to lead 59-46 at the interval.
However Bailey shouldered
the load and carried his team back into contention, sparkling at both ends
of the court as Birmingham embarked on a 13-0 run to close the third period,
the American All-Star personally contributing eight points in a row.
Hindered by the loss
of Chris Webber, who sat out the final 17 minute after picking up hos fourth
foul, Edinburgh slowly saw their advantage evaporate.
And although the
Scots held a 94-89 lead with three minutes left, Bullets' resilience was
unquestioned as they soared to a morale-boosting result.
"I have to be proud
of the way we came back after an awful first half performance," said Randall,
who admits his team are tired after an exhausting schedule during the past
fortnight. "We really stepped up our defence as a whole and Brant was just
outstanding."
"We just didn’t have
enough depth to finish it off," said Rocks coach Iain Maclean who scored
18, behind his team's top scorer Chambers who had 27.
