Milan stunned by Towers
Haribo London Towers pulled off a major upset in Italy in Round Seven of their qualifying pool of the Saporta Cup by handing ex-European champions Adecco Milan a shock 80-82 loss.
Danny Lewis converted a score from a Neville Austin steal to put the Towers 79-80 ahead 45 seconds from the finish of the second half.
The hosts hit one of a pair from the foul line to level the tie but Lewis came up with the vital winning basket with just nine seconds remaining, the American bagging a team high 25 points and 7 rebounds in 40 minutes.
The tight finish mirrored a tie which was close all the way. Tied 42-42 at half time, there was little to separate the sides who even up their series 1-1.
Malcolm Leak added 19 points for Towers but the game leader was Milan's Lee Nailon on 28.
That result, combined with Okapi Aalst's victory in Sweden over Plannja Lulea, opens the race for the third and fourth qualifying berths wide open again, although the Londoners still remain in fifth place with three matches remaining.
Darussafaka regained the leadership with a 81-65 mauling of Croatia Split in Istanbul, a result which ensures the Turks' passage into the last 32.
