Uniball Trophy : Giants leave it late for victory
Manchester Giants needed the final five points of the match to squeeze past Newcastle Eagles 95-92 in the uni-ball trophy at MEN Arena.
Leading by two points in the final 30 seconds, the Geordies were denied victory by a three pointer from Phil Handy and a pair from the foul strip from Tony Dorsey. But the hosts had to wait until Shahid Perkins' last second three point attempt fell wide of the target to relax.
With six players in double figures, led by Perkins and Charles Smith on 19 Newcastle's team basketball would have deserved their second victory in the trophy Pool C.
But with Tony Dorsey blasting out a game high 29 points including a perfect dozen free throws, Eagles were up against it on the road.
Giants now lead the group on 2-0 and travel to Sutton Pumas on Friday night.
