BBL Mims continues to torment Towers as Riders win
During his five years at Leopards, there was nothing Billy Mims liked to do more than to give his cross-city rivals Towers a good beating. Well, it's one tradition the American didn't leave behind when he moved northward to Leicester earlier in the season.
The Riders produced one of the most unexpected results of the season on Wednesday night when they took a 94-89 victory over the Londoners at Granby Halls, providing a severe blow to the visitors' confidence ahead of Saturday's uni-ball Trophy final with Manchester Giants.
The hosts led 30-19 at the close of the first period but saw a 13 point second quarter lead disappear to just two. After pulling ahead again by 15 points in the third quarter advantage , the visitors rebounded to enter the final ten minutes down just 73-70.
However two Malcolm Leak three-pointers against his former team put Leicester 84-72 ahead and although a brace of treys from Danny Lewis reduced the arrears to 90-88 late in the game but Riders hung on, Leak ending on 23 with team-mate Purnell Perry leading all scorers with 26.
For the capital side, Steve Bucknall and HL Coleman hit 19 apiece. Towers were without Martin Henlan through injury, whilst Leicester were missing Kevin St Kitts who has flown to Canada following a family bereavement.
