Weekend Round Up:
Turner ejection hits Spring
Team Kerry Spring Water 76 - 90 Esat
Telecom Demons (T Smith 25, R Turner 22, Vince Daly 19 - J Estick 32, J
McKenny 20, Braulio Hernandez 15)
The controversial ejection of Kerry Spring
American Robbie Turner after one minute of the second half was the critical
turning point in this encounter. The Killarney side were well on top in
the first half leading 21-15 at the end of the first quarter and with Turner
scoring 22 points in the half Kerry Spring went 40-30 in front and were
40-34 ahead at the interval.
However both Robbie Turner and Demons
player Mark Cambridge had an intentional foul each against each other in
the first half. The two players clashed again after one minute of the second
half and Turner received a second intentional meaning he had to leave the
game. In the circumstances Cambridge was fortunate to stay on the court.
With Turner out of the way Demons gradually
began to get on top through Americans Joe McKenny and John Estick along
with Spaniard Braulio Hernandez. Demons led 60-52 entering the final quarter
and despite the best efforts of Terry Smith, Vince Daly and Cormac O'Donoghue
for Kerry Spring, the loss of Turner was just too difficult to overcome
and Demons had 14 points to spare in the end.
Players fouled out: Robbie Turner (KSW)
18.55 remaining in second half.
Denny Notre Dame 72 – 65 St Vincent’s (E
Blair 19, A Jenkins 18, B Benjamin 15 - B Tonkonvich 28, S McGuirk 13,
David Donnelly 11)
Saturday 9th October
Team Kerry Spring Water 66 - 65 Hibernian
UCD Marian (R Turner 33, V Daly 16, T Smith 10 - N Charles 15, R Brennan
12, A Wilmott 12)
A late basket from Kerry Spring Water
caption Vincent Daly with eight seconds remaining gave Kerry Spring a narrow
one-point victory over Hibernian UCD Marian in Killarney on Saturday night.
Before that the Dubliners looked well on their way to victory and were
63-56 in front with 2.41 left on the clock. However Kerry Spring pulled
it through superb defence and late baskets from Robbie Turner, Terry Smith
and Vince Daly.
The first quarter of this game was keenly
contested with the Dubliners leading 10-4 after four minutes thanks to
Neville Charles and a three pointer from Andy Wilmott. However Vince Daly
and Robbie Turner clawed back and Marian's lead was cut to 12-11 at the
quarter.
Marian's Bosman player Richie Brennan
Found his range from downtown as he netted a hat-trick of three pointers
and along with the accurate free shooting of Patrick Glover, the visitors
led 37-30 at the interval.
Duane Jones stretched Marian's lead to
nine points early in the second half but Kerry Spring gradually came back
mainly through Shane Horgan and Robbie Turner and Turner tied the game
at 47 points each on the buzzer at the end of the third quarter. Turner
continued to impress in the final quarter and levelled it again at 54 each
with 6.23 remaining. However a technical foul on Terry Smith almost cost
Kerry Spring dearly as Marian capitalised with free throw shooting from
Edge and Glover to lead 63-56 with 2.41 left. Turner and Daly narrowed
it to 63-62 before Wilmot put Marian 65-62 ahead with 47 seconds left.
Terry Smith then converted two free throws and in the pulsating finish
a last gasp shot from 15 feet by Vince Daly clinched the tie for Kerry
Spring. Marian did have one last throw of the dice with a late effort from
Neville Charles, which came back off the ring.
Dungannon 83 – 73 BurgerKing Limerick (B
Wedel 22, T Smullen 19, M Collins 10, G Connelly 10 - J Crumby 18, J Galvin
14, R Winston 13)
Dungannon were always in control in this
game with Brian Wedel and Trevor Smullen outstanding and it was only in
the third quarter when coach Frankie O'Loane rested his starting five that
Limerick made any impression.
Sligo Dairies 79 – 70 Waterford Crystal
(J Womack 22, P Rigby 17, H Sykes 16 - T Porter 22, D Kavanagh 19, S Hall
15)
Sligo Dairies were without their expected
American Tyrone Owens for the second week as Henry Sykes once more lined
out for the North West side - who these week got their SuperLeague campaign
off to a start against last years R-up. Waterford were without their
key man Roscoe Patterson who sat it out with an arm injury. Coach
Michael Evans is hoping that Patterson will get the all clear when he returns
for a check up this Monday and that he is not faced with finding a replacement
for Patterson for next week's game. Scottie Hall stepped up and into
Patterson's shoes hitting 15pts, but it was not enough for Crystal to take
the two points.
Clare Jets 93 – 87 Tolka Rovers (A Pieper
26, M Ayanbada 21 - R Thweet 17, M Quill 17)
Sunday 10th October
Esat Telecom Demons 71 – 64 Star of the
Sea (John Estick 36, Braulio Hernandez 12, Joseph McKenny 10 - Charles
Jones 25, John Bennett 17, Tim Kennedy 10)
The defence was not up to scratch on either
team in this game. Demons had a good first half coming out in the lead
by 9 points. Mick Cambridge scored a great 3 pointer on the buzzer for
half time. They were 13 points up in the third quarter but Star of the
Sea came fighting back scoring 14 points in 6 minutes. At the end of the
third quarter Star of the Sea were leading by 2 points.
Demons got their wind back in the last
quarter and managed to pull back and win by a good margin in the end. John
Estick was fouled at the end of the game and scored his two shots for Demons
to finish off the game.
Killester 55 – 65 Neptune (Dave Weaver
17, Mike Trevor 12, Michael McMahon 9, Paddy Kelly 9 - Rasuel McKune 20,
Ricardo Leonard 19, Stephen McCarthy 11)
It was a tough game in the IWA. Killester
started great and were leading 17-8 at the end of the first quarter. Dave
Weaver and Mike Trevor were feeling the effects of a flu bug that had been
plaguing them all week. Paddy Kelly had a limited game due to a foot injury.
Neptune with Ricardo Leonard and Rasuel McKune looked great in the fourth
quarter. The game ended with Neptune the 10 point's winners in the lowest
scoring game ever between the two teams.
