Killester win a tribute to fallen star

Vince Daly 13A minutes silence was observed for Niall Brophy, former Killester player, who died on Thursday following injuries sustained in a car crash earlier in the week. His former team went into a 12 point lead straight away in the first quarter with Shoultz scored 7 points very quickly. The first quarter score was 29-19 in favour of Killester. Daly, Smith and Teahan came into their own in the second quarter for Killarney. At the end of the second quarter the score was 41-38 to Killester when Teahan scored a basket and two free throws to put Kerry Spring in the lead for the first time.
Kerry Spring continued to play well in the third quarter at the end of which they were in the lead at 68-58. In the final stages Killester pulled back with Paddy Kelly being a major force behind them. Gareth Maguire 17The first half saw a good shootout between the teams. Roscoe Patterson was shooting magnificently in the first quarter. Crystal seemed to lose the plot in the third quarter with Star getting 11 unanswered points. The third quarter score was 23-6 to Star. Crystal found their form again in the final quarter winning it 20-16 but the third quarter result proved too influential to the final score.

Jon D’Orlando 18Neptune played like champions and they easily overcame the Tolka challenge. Neptune controlled early with Leonard and McKune combining for 18 first quarter points. Tolka fell foul of the referees early on in the game, drawing two technicals when they were only ten points adrift. Neptune punished this misdemeanor by scoring 6 points from the resultant free throws and possession. The game proceeded in the same fashion with Neptune scoring on nearly every shot, reflected with a shooting percentage of 61%. Coach Fitzpatrick ran his bench for most of the game and his side played with the confidence of champions. The result was never in doubt.

Gary Connolly 12 Joseph McKenny 13Brian Clernon dropped in the opening basket straight from the tip off and from the out ball Gary Connolly leveled the match for Dungannon. There after it was basket for basket. Just on the buzzer to end the first quarter, John Estick scored a layup to put Demons two up at 15-13.
Colm O’Neill was introduced by the mid-Ulster men and h landed a layup to tie the game at 15 each. Dungannon were finding it hard to cope with the power play of Estick and Clernon as the two big men dominated the boards. They scored 14 and 10 points respectively to ease Demons into a ten point lead at the half was mark.
Dungannon were a different team in the third quarter and mainly through the efforts of Chris Pagan, Matt Collins and Gary Connolly they had pulled the deficit back to 3 points, 45-42, with 5:37 left in the quarter. Connolly was fouled as he scored a layup, but missed the chance to close the gap once again to 3 points when he missed from the charity line. The buzzer sounded with the score at 52-56 in favour of Demons.
With five minutes to go in the final quarter Collins had a bad fall and had to leave the court with the gap down to 4 points. He had been the Tyrone men’s most influential player and the game became disjointed after this. Demons went on to win by 7 points.

They played very well under the boards getting most of the rebounds. Good defense kept Limerick at bay and Marian managed to come out with a 3 point win.

Long-time leaders Tolka Rovers must now win their two remaining games if they are to take their first league title after they allowed Meteors to lead throughout the game before succumbing 54-61. Tolka came within 2 or 3 points of them a few times but never managed to take the lead as they lost their third consecutive league game. The score at the end of the first quarter was 18-16 in favour of UL. Wildcats came back in the second quarter with Jillian Hayes having a great game. By the end of the third quarter wildcats had pulled away going 11 points into the lead. 40-51 to Wildcats. Despite great shooting from Ursula Kyne and overall good defense by UL Wildcats managed to come away with a 17 point victory. Jillian Hayes personal score was 34 points, more than double UL top scorers tally and she proved the main difference between the sides on the night.
